Is relocating the strap button a common mod on T’Birds?
Apparently. This is/was my first, came with 2 buttons at the neck end of the strap. But a lotta people put one in at the neck heel if there isn't one already. I had to put one on the neck plate on my 5er EpiBird.
Dicey being on the neck plate. Ideally, you want the correct screw length into the neck. Not a mod that you want to screw up.
The one on the 5er, I used a longer screw. Still have the original.
That's how non-dingus Rick Turner Renaissance basses are; the strap button is installed like that.

My Hofner 5001/1 has a strap button in the heel of the neck. The traditional way of connecting the strap was to wrap it under the neck extension as in image 4 below. Some would attach it behind the nut at the head. That was real folk musician old school. Oddly enough, one of my Fenders has a strap button on the headstock. Never used it that way.

Both of those are just weird.
I'd have to rout a slot under the neck(not!)and it would hafta be 3 1/2" wide. I'd never heard of a bass having a button behind the headstock. All kinds of opportunities to snag something-or someone-with that rig.
