Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

You should show Odin the Monty Python killer rabbit scene. That will instil fear of the bunny in him.

I was never a dog person growing up, but my wife converted me about 20 years ago.

After a brief and unsuccessful trial with the dumbest mutt in history, we moved on to equally dumb but far more loveable Shelties.

Mel was Sheltie 1.0, and she was so uninterested in non-humans that she would not chase birds or bunnies on a dare. Not even when a wild one careened out of a bush and collided with her accidentally!

We are now on Sheltie 2.0. Jerry does like a good run and a bark, but he has the intelligence of a 3-day-old bagel. The only thing he has ever caught, was a dead rat that got stuck in the fence...

Even the Great Rat Incident, as it’s known in the neighbourhood, did nothing to redeem Jerry’s reputation.

The best we can figure, the rat died early in the fall.

He evidently had enough time to build up a pretty good stink by the time he became a fence popsicle, because sometime in February, the tasty frozen treat gave Jerry a wicked case of Delhi Belly.

We were totally unaware of the source of his intestinal distress until the third day, when my son noticed Jerry looking forlornly at the decapitated head laying out of reach on the other side of the fence.

Did I mention that there was a gate a couple of feet further along the fence, and the neighbourhood kids had left it open?

Doesn’t seem to match the herding dog heritage. For some reason they do gravitate towards stinky rotten food.

My first dog was a terrier mutt. If you threw him a ball, he’s look at you like he was thinking, you get it. At the same time, he liked catching and eating small birds. He used to excel at begging food from the neighbors though. I had to put a tag on his collar, DO NOT FEED.

Odin is the first dog in my now-63 years to really light all the specials on my interior pinball table. A standard poodle is a very big dog. And scary smart with a personality to match. When I buy a smoked beef bone for the gnaw, Odin may take days or longer before he decides to have at it. He'll put it in "his" space and, at a time of his choosing, dives in. And he won't eat unless he's hungry, and stops eating when he's had enough. Good doggie.

I take care in restaurants never to order soup that may be infected with carrots.

No recall of any taro root experience in this lifetime. Unless it was something snuck into a health treat yummy bar I ate by accident.

Parsnips can be browned in butter after they've been cooked through. Restaurants put sprigs of parsley on dishes like that. "Eye Candy" it's said, same as a dash of paprika on deviled eggs. Most mortals are able to make deviled eggs. Fewer can make [insert your signature dish here] properly.

"Snuck into" may be the operative term, alright. An important starchy potato-like ..., uh, ... "substance" in the Caribbean and Polynesian islands with absolutely zero, nada, zip, zilch taste of it's own, mostly used for filler, except in Hawaii where they also color it blue, call it "poi" and feed it to the haolies as something exotic. Yuck! [spit]

Or, as the vegan said to his kid, "One man's meat is another man's poi, son"

Get your taro root, and turnips, along with lots of other ymmu stuff to eat, here:

Restaurants with photos give me pause because it often means indigestion lurks.

A few other rules of thumb I observe with restaurants
avoid restaurants with [adjective] [noun] names like Hungry Hunter, Rusty Scupper, &c
avoid restaurants where the staff are dressed like pirates, Disney characters, wear charming "native" costumes, reenactment fantasy stuff, &c
avoid restaurants where the menus are cut out in shapes like cowboy hats, &c
avoid any restaurant with a top floor view, especially the revolving ones (you would be shocked at the cost of a meal with wine at the top of the Eiffel Tower)

Not at Li Wah. Great food (been going there for almost 40 years, now). Very large capacity, the place to go in Cleveburgh's Chinatown district. If you decide to go on Mother's Day for some reason, get there really early, or, expect to wait hours to get in.

Welcome back, Will! How was the convention in Fairbanks?

Mrs. Dog & I spent most of last week in a big city helping a daughter-in-law with her 6-month-old son while our son was on a business trip. Actually, helping ourselves to all the grandbaby snuggles we could get away with, is more like it! Take advantage of big city culture? Naw! Unless grocery shopping counts. We left them well stocked with food and 12-months sized baby clothes, 'cause he's a big 'un. ;)
