Good opium den stories are fewer these days. Is there a rest home for aged and aging whore house piano players? Bet they have some great stories.
That reminds me very little of a bumper sticker I saw that went something like this: Please don't tell Mama I work in the oil field. She thinks I'm the piano player in a whore house.

A tack piano literally has tacks added to the felt hammer pads. That and off tuning. A cool sound. The tacks can come out.
A friend of mine, who s a very good pianist and major film collector (16mm and 35mm), did that to one of his pianos a few decades ago. He plays to silent films, occasionally, and uses a variety of instruments depending on the type of film, usually piano (tacky, or otherwise), and sometimes, his pump organ. He restored a vintage player piano years ago and it sits in his living room where he also has a Steinway grand piano. He likes to play duets with the player piano.

The silent films were't really silent. They had live music which was an important part of the show. It's interesting how organs evolved into large multi-keyboard console entertainment units for these purposes. They used them at skating/roller rinks and they have become part of hockey and baseball games.

My uncle, the WWII carrier pilot, used to say, "Better a daughter in a brothel than a son on a tin can". He never explained why, though.

You can apparently buy degrees on the interweb.

A large wholesale butcher shop that I patronize has recently cut their hours. They can’t find enough trained butchers. All building trades are working to get more people into schools. Jobs are waiting.

Which is why immigration is so important to a nation. It brings in new talent. :)

My maternal grandmother used to play piano to accompany 'silent' films. :)

Another way to do it. A pedal mod where the hammer hits metal that hits the strings. Makes for a brighter honky tonk sound.

I never knew this! One of my aunts would get a similar effect with tin foil over the strings where the hammers strike.
