I have been putting off joining in the fun, but you are havin way too much fun, and I am jealous.![]()
I was born the year Leo introduced the P-bass so I qualify.
A few weeks ago a younger gal at a gig told me I looked like Clint Eastwood. My old fart answer was "you mean old and wrinkled?". :scowl::scowl:
Obviously over the hill, make jokes instead of trying to parlay that comment into something.
Well at least I get to gig once in a while.
I like that comment above about being dead for a really long time, so enjoy playing while you can! Number please
Proof of 'Old': Got the black Ma Bell dial phone still in use - best sound quality in the house. Got the AM/FM tube radio still in use. Play the old albums on a 7' long Admiral stereo console record changer. Still have the first record purchased with my own money - Cream, Wheels of Fire.
Proof of 'Grumpy': A friend wanted to help his daughter out on a high school beauty pageant production with a theme of the 70's. We threw together Funk #49, LeGrange, and others. The named us 'the Geezers'. My 30 year old Pbass was the spring chicken amongst a couple of early 70's Les Paul Customs and an amazing late 60's Ludwig drum kit. Midway through final rehearsal the anemic little teeny boopers started complaining we were too loud. In order to vent, we sat in the back of the auditorium and heckled the old teacher that was running the show.
If this is quality GOFness, gimme my number.
I'm not sure what qualifies as "old" (though my three daughters constantly remind me that I am just that-- or maybe they are making me just that), though does it count if I sometimes get grumpy about my farts? I can fart, and my youngest daughter says "Eww". I say, "How do you know? You didn't even give it a chance to blossom!" But some, are truly "Eww" before I've even given them a chance. I just know they are failures. Does that count?![]()
Do you know what a rotary dial phone is? Or that those 12" vinyl round things perceeded cassette tapes?
Just heard the news about Phil Everly's passing. I'm sure most of us in here especially will remember his influence on our kind of music. RIP Phil.
See my post above about a few years ago teaching my son and his friend how to use one. Add to the grumpy - just for grins, I lifted the receiver on my office desk phone to see if I could still pop the cradle switch to pulse dial. It won't do it. Damn the new phones!Do you know what a rotary dial phone is?
You've got to seize the line circuit which routes you to a Group selector. That operates the A relay that operates the B and C relays. This allows dial tone from a motorized generator to be induced into the line via the A relay coils. Dialling, or tapping the cradle, flaps the A armature, which has notches to lighten it's mass, which drives the Group selector vertical the same as dialled. It then hunts horizontally to find another available group and the sequence repeats for the second number dialled. And so on. Gawd I loved those days! Walking into a silent building full of racks of equipment and leaving behind a fully functional, and very noisy, telephone exchange.
<sigh> The good old days! Now that it's pretty much all electronic, pulse dialling is no more.
Edit for correctness: That B relay was slow to release and stayed operated while the A did flap!![]()
