Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Cat are odd animals. Today I saw an old friend in front of a house that I was passing. He’s a big black cat, huge head, white socks, big blue eyes. I used to see him spralled out across the sidewalk sunning himself on the warm pavement. He’d make everyone walk around him, probably for attention. Other times he would be in the forest across the street playing the hunter. Today he greeted me, then walked beside me past a few houses, then turned in to the yard at a former convent. Never saying a word but somehow I knew that he was happy for the visit.

Every day I leave a couple of apple cores at the base of a tree, hoping that the birds will want them. Every day they are gone. Today in one short sitting I saw a cardinal, several nut hatches, a sparrow, a yellow canary, a couple of big robins, and a downy woodpecker. All getting along together and liking sunflower seeds in the shell. Sitting and listening to happy birds singing is quite a treat.

I also enjoy watching "The Animal Channel" happening all around me. :)

Finally got to see mom today after dropping her off at the hospital a month ago for an emergency hip replacement. I think she enjoyed her mother's day. I and a dozen or so family members gathered outside the open window of her room in the elder-care facility where she is doing rehab. She is much more 'with it' now that she is off the Lyrica, thank God...

Tell us about one thing that makes you grumpy. You see, we are grumpy old farts. You are almost old, so I would like to see some grumpiness.

There are a few things that make us GOF's. For example, tearing up your lawn and replacing it with a cactus garden...something I have been planning to do, just because.

What makes me grumpy?

Squirrels in the garden. I have ran out into the yard to chase the little bastards off... in my underwear.

Kids who park across from my house and smoke pot. I have an awesome mean glare and just stare.

Dogs who poop on my lawn. Even though the owners pick up the poop, I hate it.

Need more examples of grumpy?:)

Something close. For some reason, out of nowhere this weekend I got it in my head to tear up a 42 year old wall-to-wall carpet. The company that I worked for at the time bought it when I relocated to another city. It felt good to finally break all ties with that company.

Drat.

Feels like a cool morning, looks like a dark morning, and off this afternoon to the surgeon to reschedule the fusion procedure for my right foot. Had I gone ahead with the surgery as scheduled, I'd be out of the cast by now. And of course with nowhere to go, &c. But I delayed the procedure to address a different concern that's sort-of cleared up. And read my labs when they came in this weekend, the right one's low and the wrong one's high. Will wait to September for the surgery is the way I see it this morning. At least able to get around in the summer weather! Definitely not looking forward to two months on crutches but there we are on a cool morning, a dark morning.

OK, here's my GOF/Red Green event for the week.

Wife sometimes doesn't get the door totally closed on the upright freezer, so I installed a latch. The adhesive failed. I wanted something that couldn't come loose, so I thought I'd just sneak one little screw in right next to the doorjamb. (you all see where this is going, right?) Just as the drillbit sank through the sheet metal, I got a 20 second blast of R12 in the face. Had to happen...no way it WOULDN'T happen.

Fortunately, we didn't have a huge amount of pork and beef left, so we were able to move it all into other freezers around the place. But, we'll be getting a hog and half a beef in the fall.

Now, this freezer is in the basement, and the outside stairway we used to put it in is no longer passable due to earth settling and concrete cracking. The inside stairs are too narrow to let it pass. So, no way to get the old one out or a new one in...have to find a new place for the new one when I buy it, and let the house collapse around the dead one.

Any guesses about my wife's reaction to all this?

Being in the dog house isn’t fun.

On the plus side, a new freezer will be energy efficient.

1-800-Got-Junk removes stuff for free. If they serve your country location, they will haul it out of the basement for you. Maybe slide it up the stairs on a few 2x4’s or plywood acting as a ramp.

Otherwise, this would gnaw at me. Remove the door. Remove the compressor. See if it is easier to manage when lighter. If all else fails, a grinder with a cutting wheel from the tool rental store will take care of it.
