OK, here's my GOF/Red Green event for the week.

Wife sometimes doesn't get the door totally closed on the upright freezer, so I installed a latch. The adhesive failed. I wanted something that couldn't come loose, so I thought I'd just sneak one little screw in right next to the doorjamb. (you all see where this is going, right?) Just as the drillbit sank through the sheet metal, I got a 20 second blast of R12 in the face. Had to happen...no way it WOULDN'T happen.

Fortunately, we didn't have a huge amount of pork and beef left, so we were able to move it all into other freezers around the place. But, we'll be getting a hog and half a beef in the fall.

Now, this freezer is in the basement, and the outside stairway we used to put it in is no longer passable due to earth settling and concrete cracking. The inside stairs are too narrow to let it pass. So, no way to get the old one out or a new one in...have to find a new place for the new one when I buy it, and let the house collapse around the dead one.

Any guesses about my wife's reaction to all this?

Sound like a job for superglue and duct tape!!! Seriously though, be careful with 800 junk. I have heard of cases where they show up and charge a lot more than quoted.

Finally started my long delayed DIY 100 watt tube amp build. Man, parts vendors are hungry right now. Got quoted a one week turnaround on an output transformer wind, for a great price too. I'm currently working on enclosure mockups, which are always the hardest part of DIY builds for me. Over the years I've learned that letting a good CNC shop handle the metal work is well worth the extra expense. So much for my stimulus check...LOL!

I see 800 Junk trucks everywhere. I guess that they put other’s out of business and now charge crazy rates.

I like the idea of free delivery and removal of the old appliance. I just wonder what the catch is.

The reciprocating saw seems to work well on a freezer.

I scored a bunch of tube power amp boards and power transformers from some old horse trader a couple of years ago and they've just been collecting dust. So I have no choice, I have to build something. I don't even like tubes for "regular" bass all that much, but this one will be for slide bass duty mostly, and for guitar as well until I get around to building myself a new low power guitar amp. My actual justification is that doing DIY projects keeps me somewhat sane, or what passes for that at least.

One 6SL7, two 12AU7, probably. But I'm thinking about doing a 2 X 50 watt power amp eventually as well.

Nope, EI jobs, 355 CT @ 650mA and a Heyboer DR103 Partridge clone. The P-I section is transformer driven too. So four power tubes of currently indeterminate flavor.

Yeah, probably a custom wind from not the usual suspects this time. Triad are getting back into doing their classic designs and I liked their vibe at NAMM this year. I also met a guy at the show who wound Hiwatt trafos back in the day. Or maybe it's time to just start winding copper myself...

Hell no! I've had my fill of that for the last few weeks and this is supposed to be fun.

A Triad A-11J or A-12J reissue would be nice for a DI build. The originals are too expensive, when you can find one.

I’ve used Triad toroid power transformers. Usually unwinding them to customize the voltages. Good valued products.

I was just trying to get an understanding of the hours and expense of a hand-made (analogue) product vs. a mass produced (digital) one. And, I do understand your statement as it refers to sanity. I have been trying find mine after being jailed for two months .

No worries at all my friend. I'm going to post a build thread and I'll at least take a stab at guesstimating that stuff. I have a lot of the infrastructure in place this time, much of it left over from a 2013 tube preamp project I did for an actual paying pro player customer. I think maybe a grand in parts (at retail, which I don't always pay by any means) and couple of hundred hours in labor would be realistic, but the actual physical build will probably take less than a week, and I used to be really slow at doing circuit board layouts and all the computer modeling, graphics design, and so on. Learning how to learn stuff is time consuming! OTOH, I've been building one new widget a day for the last few weeks, onboard preamps, pedals, and so on. I've done more than a dozen new circuit board layouts that are mostly now waiting to be ordered and built as well.

And yeah, my wife told me to just do something cool with my part of the check and would rather see me doing some actual physical work rather than just burning more hours on the computer. I'm buying an iPad for the first time and setting up a new practice/recording space away from the 'puter too, the current deals are just too good not to.

Welp, and it's not like you'll need to evacuate and capture the refrigerant now. (I'm too ignorant to know whether more might be lurking in the innards, or if all of it took its opportunity to escape from the sheet metal screw incursion.) Then, for the cost, if necessary, of a sawzall, you've got a ready-made license to tear [stuff] up!

Reporting in on a Monday of indeterminate space/time location where the doctor's office staff looks to me pretty tired of working all day in a mask. Here in front of this computer, with a very contented dog by my side, looking at even more bass time today. The fusion surgery is now set for mid-late September. The first available date shown was September 11 and decided on the spot I hold no wish for any further associations for that. Scheduled out two weeks beyond as part of my decision to enjoy the summer without a cast.

And it is without great reserve it seems to me the sudden-onset American solution to an uncooperative appliance is to get some entertainment in its exit from this world.

Cat are odd animals. Today I saw an old friend in front of a house that I was passing. He’s a big black cat, huge head, white socks, big blue eyes. I used to see him spralled out across the sidewalk sunning himself on the warm pavement. He’d make everyone walk around him, probably for attention. Other times he would be in the forest across the street playing the hunter. Today he greeted me, then walked beside me past a few houses, then turned in to the yard at a former convent. Never saying a word but somehow I knew that he was happy for the visit.

Every day I leave a couple of apple cores at the base of a tree, hoping that the birds will want them. Every day they are gone. Today in one short sitting I saw a cardinal, several nut hatches, a sparrow, a yellow canary, a couple of big robins, and a downy woodpecker. All getting along together and liking sunflower seeds in the shell. Sitting and listening to happy birds singing is quite a treat.

I have a cat named Gata, she's 12 and a calico although she's more black than white but she's got the orange and white too, she's a pretty kitty, I've had her since she was a little kitty, about 3 months old. She's attached to me for some reason and really likes me, sometimes I think she's the only one.
