What year is that Jeff? I have an 85 4003FL that looks like that one except it's got the 1" spacing and regular knobs. I like 1/2" spacing better, i like the sound better. Is that the one JH made for you?

It could have been yellowed I have a 79 4001 that's yellowed. That's a nice bass, I had a white with black trim years ago. First thing I do when I buy an old ric is to bypass that cap. Incidentally I think your bass is a normal 4003, the ones without the trim and the dotted necks are the S models.
The black hardware and pickguard was short lived, at least at the time.

I know it, I have a black truss rod cover somewhere at home. I'm thinking of getting a new jetglo 4003S because of no trim and buying a black pick guard somewhere which are available and put the black TRC on it and having an all black Ric which is what I've always wanted. They did make some jetglos with black trim but they're really hard to find.

What? You had a TV set in your bedroom! I didn't see a TV set until the mid '50's and that was at a neighbors. My parents didn't get a TV until several years later and I couldn't figure out how to play through it. Had to wait until they got an Admiral console stereo and then had to sneak to play through that. Guess I was born on the wrong side of the tracks

It was an old TV someone had given to my father during the early 60's that had a blown picture tube, my father being the cheapskate he was wouldn't fix it and gave it to me. It had an RCA jack on the back and I rigged up a cord for my guitar. I got a lot of use out of that thing, I used to hook up my AM radios directly to the speaker for more bass and plugged my guitar into the back of it.
That explains it...great ingenuity there! Was it your first tube amp?
Mine has no chrome, all the metal is black as well. Maybe I should have ordered it in blackburst.

My main squeeze is a Fender P (Of course, it's SB, RW, tort, La Bella flats -- what, they come in other colors?!?). My younger brother acquired a wild hair and had Sweetwater send me a CAR Squier Jag SS one day a few years ago. It's heavier than my P! Couldn't believe it. I mean, it's short scale, so it's just gotta be lighter, right? Man, it puts out, though. Great tone, only had to make a few normal tweaks to the setup, but the skinny neck gets my hand a little crampy after an hour or so. I was thinking about putting lightweight Hipshot tuners on it, but I'm loath to spend the bucks on an instrument that's uncomfortable, or worse, possibly injurious to play. I became fascinated with tubes when I was a little kid playing around with an old console radio in the attic, I'm not sure how old I was.
My main squeeze is a Fender P (Of course, it's SB, RW, tort, La Bella flats -- what, they come in other colors?!?). I mean, it's short scale, so it's just gotta be lighter, right? Man, it puts out, though. Both have La Bella flats. I cheat though, they're P/J basses. My main bass for years was a 1968 CAR P bass with a 66 J neck neck with lollipop tuners, I stupidly sold it about 25 years ago.

Geeze, when I was a teenager I worked in a variety store (anybody remember Safeway Super S in the 60s?) that had a tube tester. Guys would bring in paper sacks with all the tubes they'd yanked out of their TVs or radios and stick them in the proper places and wait for them to warm up and see what the result was. If they had a bad one, they'd have to hunt one of us up and we'd go get the key to the cabinet and see whether we had that tube in stock. We often did, but if not their jaws would tighten because then they'd have to go to the TV repair place and pay considerably more.
I remember tube testers all over the place, Radio Shack, Lafayette, The Fair etc. I'm a ham and still collect radios, both communications receivers and consoles. I have a console called an RCA 816K from 1937 that has two 6L6 power tubes in it like the old Fenders. It puts out 25 watts into it's 12" speaker, i love the thing, sounds like an old jukebox and has a bass boost circuit built in. I'll listen to WTWW on 5.830 mHz shortwave out of TN at night and they have a great old rock n roll program on it.

I was with you on your "main squeeze" as I love SB, RW, tort and La Bella flats but, what your brother sent you wasn't any of that. Maybe if it was, it could have been lighter (yes, a stretch) and you may have been able to get over the SS and skinny neck but, I am with you on the hand cramps. I had those with a Fender P because of the long scale and wider neck (that is a stretch, for me).
In other words, we are similar, but different and I am happy to call you a friend
