Poor ol' armadillo was walking along one day, got thirsty, spotted a brook, put its little armadillo lips down to the cool clear water... BAM! Taxiderminated right on the spot. Apologies to Mona Lisa Vito.
Hmm, I put the cap back in (it was never there to begin with, actually) my old April '98 4001V63. But then, I had also put that '60s horseshoe pickup in it to match.First thing I do when I buy an old ric is to bypass that cap.
It was an '04 that I bought "new". It was a returned bass The guy had it a week, or so) from Bass Northwest, so I got an incredible deal on it.
I did the vintage-izing on it, routing for the 1/2" location of the neck pickup, and adding all the vintage style stuff (Pickguardian pickguard - Tony made two for me, one in the standard material, the other a white back-painted plexi pickguard). I put the toaster in the bridge position (hard to see in that photo). Here's a better one (the back-painted plexi PG - rounded edges, too - is on it in this photo):That is the only Rick I put a Hipshot bridge on, as the saddles on the stock tailpiece/bridge were all the way back and still intonated sharp on all four strings (yes, mom, I do intonate fretless basses

The black hardware was powder-coated. How is the tailpiece on yours?
I used to like Jazz Bass profile necks until I started getting older, then my hands did the same. Rick neck profiles (at least, the ones that are not too baseball batty) are perfect, as are P Bass necks that meet the same requirement. 1 5/8" to 1 11/16" nuts are perfect.
The other day I made some "farewell" photos of the current (soon, to be previous) upstairs back porch. The area to be demolished is above the range hood exhaust vent which is below the floor of the porch.

You had a real 60's horseshoe? How did it sound compared to the regular high gain bridge pickup?
No problems at all with the tailpiece. The black finish looks identical to that of the pickup sourrounds and the tuners. Even the gears are black, I assume that they are anodized. The tuners are stampted Rickenbacker. The bridge and frets are like the standard basses.
Will the new window casings match the color of the others?

Yeah, I did; it was one that Dale Fortune had rebuilt years ago. I had it on three different Ricks, over time. My old '08 JG 4003 that I also vintage-ized, the V63, then lastly, my old March '73 4001 that a friend has now, still with that pickup. The tone is "typical" '60s Rick-like, very wide range frequency response, and not really any lower in output than a '70s hi-gain pickup. I find modern hi-gains to be pretty hot and a bit muddier sounding compared to their lower-wound ancestors.

I was wondering if you have experience much tail lift with it, or does it have the two extra screws at the back of the tailpiece?
My 85 has the two extra screws, my 79 doesn't but I've never had any trouble with tail life on it but I've never used heavy strings on it either.
More or less, yes. We are eliminating the two windows closest to the main house on each side (they are currently covered on the inside, with luan to block them off to see how the ambient light looks throughout the day without those windows) to give us more usable wall space in the porch, beyond the added insulation in them. There will still be three windows across the back, along with one window each around the corner from those, on each side; they will all be tied together, visually, with Azek trim boards wrapping around the corners. Of course, once we actually start building, no doubt, there may be some minor revisions as we don't know what inside those walls, for sure. Sold my X-Ray vision glasses a few years ago when the vintage market for them was way up!

That is exactly why I always look around before taking a drink...never can be too safe.
No tail lift with the four screws. The only issue that I have is not liking the plastic rear pickup cover. I removed it. Also changed the knobs.
Hey GOF's! I just got a new Ibanez Mikro lefty bass today. I'm really pleasantly surprised at the quality for an economy bass. The neck is buttery smooth and clean frets with no dips in the fret board. Very happy about it!
