Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Friday On My Mind

Take one day at a time. This is usually a good one, it’s pizza Friday. Another hot and humid day, some rain relief will come later. The birds were up yapping at 4:30 this moring. My queue to get up and wander around outside.

Normally you find the drunks in the parks sleeping it off. A lot of other folks are now sleeping in parks, they have camping equipment, some even tents. Many come from somewhere else as they do every year. The business of pan handling for beer and drug money isn’t what it used to be. People don’t carry cash anymore. Cops are issuing $1500 fines to the homeless for congregating. That makes a lot of sense. Good way to place a warrant on their heads in case the cops want a reason to haul them in. To where, I don’t know. Jails are being emptied. Summer festivals are cancelled. Yet they still come.

Grump time!
Extremely upset!
We have a non-profit program here in this town which is a 6 week music camp to encourage young ladies (12-18) into music, called Girls Rock Reno. It shall be referred to as GRR. It was to begin the 20th of April but postponed. And postponed and postponed. Today I was notified as a major contributer that the camp and the concerts they perform at the end has been canceled indefinitely. In addition to the heads up there was an offer to return my contributions which I flat refused. A 2017 Mustang PJ and a Epiphone SG G400. No Storage they said. When my anger towards the city powers that be finally cooled I notified the organizers to offer them to the girls they were issued to. Then bill the city council and mayor $1000 a piece. My anger has absolutely nothing to do with the instruments or donating. It's not about me. My anger and concern are for those 22 girls who I am sure their hearts are broken. The 12 year old who ended up with the PJ doesn't know Covid from Acne. All she knows is something she had been looking forward to and counting on was yanked. From her lips to my ear. I was asked what might I like for my generosity and my request was those who made the decision explain it face to face and in language they could understand why they had to experience this disappointment. I can not think of any harsher punishment than dealing with just teenagers and their families. Angry?! You bet I am. This guarantees Grumpy Old Fart for a considerable amount of time.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Quit yer bellyachin' Bob! LOL

Looking around at this world that I've inhabited for 70 years...seeing what seems to be trending socially, politically, economically....really glad I'm old. Not blaming or pointing any fingers, but the global suck factor is rising exponentially. Ah, well...long as I can keep the birds fed, I guess I got no whine coming.

Everyone have a nice Sunday.

On a happy note, complimented on my tone in my most recent upload for Ari Cap's course. Halfway through and things are getting much more interesting.

Received two replacement ear pads for my Sennheiser PXC 450 cans. Ordered on the cheap from the 'zon and the process of putting the old clip rings in the new pads has me to the point of just saying forget it. Christmas gifted myself with a set of Senn HD 4.50BTNC cans. They're Bluetooth but also take a wire. Looks to me they're my new headphones cause I'm not wasting more time fiddling with the new ear pads. The new cans are pretty good and don't require a battery.

I like where I live just fine but there’s never a shortage of jerks that make life difficult. I take respite from it all by being with the animals and birds in the woods. It also helps to ignore the news.

I broke up two bird fights yesterday. They can really go at it. They mark out their territory and ward off interlopers. Birds can be jerks as well.

They should sell the ear pads with the lock rings installed.

They do if I buy from Sennheiser. Which I didn't. $ Right? At question is if I want to keep and use the old ones. I'm not burning more time trying to pry the locking ring into the new ear pads.

Can you return those and buy the Senns?

The replacement ear pads from Senn are about $55. For eight year old headphones. I spent about $23 for the ear pads without the installed locking ring, so out that much. My new Senn HD 4.50 BTNC do everything the old ones do and also function as a headset. I need the headset in my daily work, as well as for listening to music and the like.

New ones pack to half the size. Both are also noise-canceling. Should be possible to make them my main set (which they pretty much are already). I use the old cans when I need to run a headphone with my amp. That's pretty much every time I'm learning something new, actually. Start, stop, rewind, start, stop. I can use the new headphones with the cable and call it a day. The old ones really served me well.

I love noise-canceling headphones.

Up at altitude I always see the same headphone brands carried by the business guys with their nobby Montblancs and Brooks suits. I won't say which one but I heard someone advise Buy Other Stereo Equipment. The noise canceling feature is awesome. Works on trains, too. The new Senns will pack nicely.

I have had her course for prolly over a year, and her book for longer. Haven't been able to make myself be disciplined enough to get started, beyond clicking around the first lesson, and I've studied music since I was a kid, so it's not an intimidation thing. What worked to get you going?

It's my third serious attempt, and so far it's working. First, I bought the book and registered for the online course material. In January of 19 I made the commit to join the first experimental cohort (a group of us moving through the material at the same time). A couple weeks into the material, I found myself seriously ill (February 19) and never caught back up. This time around I resolved to complete it.

At 10 weeks we're into some serious woodshedding. The cohort material includes a great deal more than the standard book. It is the same stuff but goes way deeper.

I've consigned myself to the attitude that I am a stone beginner and have stuck fast to technique exercises. The cohort material is "for life" and I can go back for what I need when I am able.

Truly hate recording videos of myself doing technical exercises for the camera. Yet am learning a great deal from it all.

What I actually see when I review my submissions is improvement. Feeling much more confidence, and it helps to see in the videos that my hands look quite relaxed. I'm watching my posture, my tone, my time, everything. For recording I set a metronome running through some earbuds with one plugged into my left ear. That way the metronome isn't recorded. The cell phone method is pretty meh but hey. Got me this DAW to mess with and stuff ....

What I need is to be playing with others and that's kind of scratched right now. Last time I was playing live, had to call a Big Time Out because both knees needed replacements owing to very advanced osteoarthritis. It's a wonder I could even walk at all by the time I was finally cleared for surgery. Which was another odyssey across a couple continents, and recovery yet another odyssey.

The new Senns are pretty soundproofed, so using them to keep time without recording the metronome/drum machinethingy really isn't going to work.

Declared this day a grand Take Good Care of Myself Day and just past the one hour mark of three hours of henna. It's a day for me to be gentle with myself as I put back the original intent. No headphones for the next two or three hours as it does its magic.

Thanks for your perspective and experience. I get so quickly bored with drills, exercises and technique builders. I did so much of that stuff with other instruments. I'm that way with everything, and always have been: I want to run before I can walk. I don't want to go through "this is a whole note, these are the lines of the staff" stuff yet again. But.

Taking the attitude you did, of being a total beginner, is the only way I know to make it work for me. I know that if I don't, I will skip through stuff, and that won't be the commitment that is needed to produce the desired result, which is completing the course. I know already that if I skip stuff that I will at some point have to refer back to at least some of it in a later lesson, and that will make the later lesson disjointed.

All righty, then. Once current health issues are resolved, which may or may not be fairly soon, I will commit to a start date and see it through. Ari Cap is too good a clinician and player not to see what she wants me to learn. Plus, she once played at a local dive, and remembered it. So there's that. Thanks again!

What would be cool is if someone invented a folding stool that was angled to allow the player to partially stand while performing. Note to self. Draw out plans on napkin, contact Warren Buffett.
There are all sort and manner of shooting sticks with various types of seats that might serve. Though I don't think I'd use one, so... :meh:
