I can so identify with this.
I do remote software support for veterinary hospitals. One of my favourites is when they call after a power outage, and I find out that the Vet's personal workstation has a nice, big UPS...
...But the server doesn't.
I've also seen them pull the reception workstation off its dedicated UPS, so they can protect the credit card machine. Brilliant- months later, in the middle of a power outage, they discover that it's hard to cash the client out when you can't access the invoice information on the computer...

An iPad, the most basic/cheapest one available. I've already had the Steinberg (Yamaha) UR242 interface for couple of years, but of course now I have GAS for the new MOTU compact ones. I'm planning on mostly using Cubasis since it integrates well with the Steinberg hardware, and the new version offers options for a few Waves plug-ins for little money. I have all sorts of plugs and DAW apps on my PC, just really need the iPad setup for track capture and as a creative sketch pad.
I am taking a very casual approach here, recording has never been a big priority at all and most likely never will be. But I get requests all the time for demo vids, and I refuse to use a stoopid phone for that no matter what, especially my crusty low rent GOF approved one!
For mics I have a pair of Crown PZM-6D plate mics, and I know where the sweet spots in my living room are. SM-87 for vocals, Audix small condensor reference mic for acoustic instruments and/or tech work. Finis, done and dusted, long since paid for, nothing new wanted or needed. Famous last words, I know.

This war story is from our help desk ... who every Monday morning received increasingly angry calls at a new site. For sometime Sunday night all the fileservers go down, every Sunday night ... the resolution takes an incredible amount of detective work and it turns out
It turns out the UPS looks like a very good place to plug in a floor buffer when the computer lab is cleaned ....

Cool. It's a fast moving playing field and I haven't really bothered to try to keep up. I bought the Steinberg one as a stopgap and it's not really quite right for the tech work I would like to do. But it sounds fine, was quite inexpensive, and I wouldn't hesitate to haul it out to a jam or gig pretty much anywhere. Commodity item, aleady obsolete, suits me fine in this case. When I bought it the easy iPad connectivity was a bullet point, and connecting it up couldn't be much easier.

The iPad retina displays are good for crisp detail. I like the Waves Renaissance Bass and MV2 compressor. Both simple to use and effective.
When buying Waves products, there is always a -10% coupon available if you google for a waves coupon code. It works on sale plugins as well.

Heh. When I worked the fisheries research game I was responsible for keeping a whole lot of PCs and other junk up and running 24/7, and we had contracts that gave back serious money for data lapses. But we usually only needed one 5 minute data set an hour per widget to fulfill the contract, so my job felt a lot like Russian roulette. Do feel lucky with that intern replacing a whole computer at 3AM, punk?

The Cubasis Waves plugins are very basic and cost 8 bucks apiece: Waves Instruments Nominated for 2017 TEC Awards | News | Waves
I'll just have to see how enthused I am about doing any actual multitrack mixing on the Pad, especially since I only went for the 32GB model. The Cubasis GUI does look quite pretty though, for sure. And doing loop based stuff in Garage Band should be fun for a minute at least.
There's no end when you start buying plugins. I use Logic on my computer, on the ipad I use a product called Auria Pro. It really is quite nifty and it’s surprising what you can do on a little screen. Never tried Cubase, they all get the job done if you can figure them out.

Or just hoover free ones! I have way too many to count. I've used most of the older Waves bundles and I'd have no problem buying them if I had paying projects, but that's not in the cards at the moment.
I already have a midscale version of Cubase on my PC and Cubasis can export whole project files to it, so I'm going to start that way. Cubase is deeply obtuse though, and I don't really need an app for that, I can manage that quite well on my own.
Sadly I can't read music. Always meant to learn but when I started the pop music published were all piano charts and not what was on the record. I learned the music from the records. I used to play by ear but my earrings kept getting caught in the strings!

Extremely upset!
We have a non-profit program here in this town which is a 6 week music camp to encourage young ladies (12-18) into music, called Girls Rock Reno. It shall be referred to as GRR. It was to begin the 20th of April but postponed. And postponed and postponed. Today I was notified as a major contributer that the camp and the concerts they perform at the end has been canceled indefinitely. In addition to the heads up there was an offer to return my contributions which I flat refused. A 2017 Mustang PJ and a Epiphone SG G400. No Storage they said. When my anger towards the city powers that be finally cooled I notified the organizers to offer them to the girls they were issued to. Then bill the city council and mayor $1000 a piece. My anger has absolutely nothing to do with the instruments or donating. It's not about me. My anger and concern are for those 22 girls who I am sure their hearts are broken. The 12 year old who ended up with the PJ doesn't know Covid from Acne. All she knows is something she had been looking forward to and counting on was yanked. From her lips to my ear. I was asked what might I like for my generosity and my request was those who made the decision explain it face to face and in language they could understand why they had to experience this disappointment. I can not think of any harsher punishment than dealing with just teenagers and their families. Angry?! You bet I am. This guarantees Grumpy Old Fart for a considerable amount of time.

It’s hard not to stress over that which you have no control over. There isn’t much that you can do about their decisions.
Locally there were 563 new covid cases and 74 related deaths between Wednesday and Thursday. This goes on day after day. It ain’t over and yet because the numbers are down they are easing up on some restrictions. Many young people simply are not respecting distancing rules.
A better balance has to be found between protection and freedom. I don’t know what the best solution is.
It’s hard not to stress over that which you have no control over. There isn’t much that you can do about their decisions.

I find holding my thumb helps change things I can do nothing about. No way to tell which way it'll change — or what I'll think about it — but at least I have something to do.
