Most of the naval aviation sea stories I recall started with a line like, there I was feet wet, bogey inbound, winchestered, bingo fuel and out of airspeed, but I had altitude...and usually ends with a night time, first pass, two wire trap.

I know (knew?) a bass player who earned his keep as the crew chief on a fishing boat. I absolutely believed his stories

My first apartment had a cockroach that outsmarted me for a year. The rats were big enough that they could run up and down the stairs in the stairwells. The super would whack them with a broom leaving blood on the walls.
It was the next place that had ants. Their final solution was to put these tubes inside the building’s outer brick walls. It got rid of the ants and every other type of bug PDQ. I often wondered what type of chemical they used and what the long term effect on humans would be.

Given the timeframe I imagine you'd be referring to I would guess it was Chlordane. Banned long ago (mid 80's IIRC), it was the single most effective thing against anything that crawled for many years. As you probably guessed it was a human carcinogen...but boy did it do a number on bugs!
Good thing (or, not) that I stopped crawling long before that time.

In Vietnam, they would send soldiers called tunnel rats, into holes that led to underground enemy complexes. Pretty scary stuff.
I knew a black lab that would come with us into fields. He’d full up on mice, eating them whole with one bite.
