I want to make some layout changes for lower noise. So I might do it with FR4 and turrets. The dust from that material is quite hazardous. On the other hand, Hoffman Amps makes nice custom boards on a CNC machine and has a fast turnaround. Place an order and it is usually shipped same day. Cost of an FR4 5E3 with eyelets or turrets is under $20. There is an app for laying out the boards.

I’ve used Mercury Magnetics transformers for these type of amps. The chrome chassis is off the shelf.

I've worked with FR-4 quite a lot. As composites go, it's bad but far from the worst. Just get a Tyvek suit and a proper respirator with the right cartridges, and don't mess with it in your living space. I've contemplated using Hoffman's service quite a few times, but doing PCBs has always worked great for me, and having a spare or two on hand is comforting. But since it's a Fedner clone (sic) I'd probably just go with eyelets.

The only thing I knew in the spring of 79 about what was about to be "My Ray" is I'd never seen anything like it before.

There isn't a great deal of genealogy to trace beyond the possibility that Leo himself may have been in the same building at the same time My Ray was midwifed into this world. My own stewardship of the instrument basically entitles me to unquestioned lifetime memebership in the crappy bassists with expensive gear club. I see from the serial numbers on record some of the Stingrays very close to my own saw presence with big deal frontmen including Eric Clapton.

As I consider a new short scale as my Chowny CHB-1 has become my daily player, I wonder what to do with My Ray. It needs the attention of someone with greater skill than likely available where I am now. The repairs and shipping could approach the cost of a new G&L Tribute Fallout or one of these short scale Rays? I really intended to retire My Ray, yet I don't feel right knowing it deserves my attention in light of all it's given me.

Did the Monday night outdoor open mic/jam thing last night. As usual, typical SE FL conditions: hot, humid, no breeze. I prefer to not take my '67 NR THUNDERBIRD in those circumstances, so opted to use my new[to me, anyway]'09 Epi EB-0. It had been awhile since I'd played a Mudbucker-equipped bass live and at some volume.Wow. Hadda turn down the bass EQ on the 2-R100's I was playing through. Report from those listening was that it sounded choice. I should be receiving the Hipshot replacement bridge today and once that's on and adjusted to my liking, it'll be ready to go. We have a paid gigFriday night-first since 3/14, but it's indoors so I'll prolly take the 'Bird-with the EB-0 as backup.

I have a big white disposable suit and a respirator. But dust inside can get everywhere. I don’t want to contaminate a vacuum cleaner so I contain the talc like dust and use sticky paper to pick it up. I buy 4 ft by 4 ft sheets and have it partially laser cut into 3.125” widths by 4’ lengths. I cut those to length so there’s not as much dust that way. I’m out of that stock and only have big pieces remaining. Machining it to size would generate quite a mess.

Yep. I used to modify FR4 windsurfing fins and had a friend who CNC milled them all day in his shop on Maui. You really want a laminar flow ventilation system at that point: fans above and below the work with hoods, venturi flow generators, and so on. And then you still have to trap and dispose of the dreck. Meh, just pay Hoffman or whoever to do it for you!

I looked at the Babicz-and the price, but the Hipshot has gotten rave reviews in TB Club and the EB and SG club and I got it for ~$91 shipped. Still under the price of a new EB-0 and I'd still need a bridge. So, I'm good......... Well, OK.

Yup! Replaced the floating oil derrick bridge on my 2013 SG with a Supertone. Love it. That, and a set of La Bella DTFs, are the only two changes I made after I bought it. That sweet, sweet mud!
