Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

I used to work in an old medical building that had a morgue with bodies for dissection in the anotomy lab. That was a grusome room, embalmed bodies on marble slabs being peeled back from head to toes throughout the year until there was nothing left. Trays of old dissection tools. The morgue was full of embalmed bodies hanging by hooks under their arms, their wrists tied back waiting for the next year. They were covered with plastic, hanging on racks like cloths at a dry cleaners.

I would sometimes pull all nighters one floor up where I was the only one in this huge quiet building. In the middle of the night when you are numb and tired, things would happen. Shadows would appear and move, you'd feel a chill and an odd feeling in the gut. When I mentioned it, I was told that there were many reports of hauntings. As if the morgue wasn't enough, people had committed suicide in the building. There were some workers that out-and-out refused to be in there after dark. There was something about that building, you felt it when you entered.

Once interviewed Thomas Noguchi, speaking of. No great illuminations beyond the contemplation of criminal forensics.

Every body really does tell a story. It’s about investigating, problem solving, and piecing together a puzzle. An interesting field.

The bodies in the morgue that I was in were the poor that would donate their bodies to science to avoid funeral costs. Some were John Doe’s I was told. Once a year they would hold a service for those that had served, their remains were cremated and buried with dignity. One couldn’t help but wonder who they were, what lives they led.

Well just in time for Halloween. I got a nice new Frankensteinian scar on my face. I was making a pine box and a piece of lumber fell and hit me square on the bridge of my nose. Got a good cut, swelling, big purple bruise. As a kid I used to box and managed to avoid a broken nose. Till now.

On the positive side, I’ll be able to scare kids till it heals.

This morning you were talking about hanging out at a morgue where they dissect bodies....

Now you are making a pine box........

Yeah, and maybe two black eyes to go along with the original injury, too.

When I was in college for radio and tv production, my internship was at the S.U. School of Medicine...shooting video exams for the medical students. Various pieces and parts as well as whole bodies involved. Each one carefully lit and artfully arranged. Wide shot for 15 seconds, slow zoom to part to be identified, hold for thirty seconds, then slow zoom back out. I did it all from technical director to lighting to camera ops. You get used to the odor of formaldehyde...and the dark humor.

Tell us some of the dark humor!
