One of the great things about Frank was that he knew how to sing WITH the horns instead of on top of the horns. Way too many big band singers sang as if they were auditioning for 42nd street with long drawn out notes and vibrato on every note possible.

Alas, all my camera gear recycled itself (with my help) into Leica collectors' hands. A Leica is the only 35mm film camera I trust to be silent enough on a live set.

Qualifier, here: M series Leica as opposed to a R series.

I still have this! Got the viewer and slide mounting equipment, too. It used to belong to my dad. Revere Stereo. Awesome!

My SO's father was a stereo buff (both kinds). I have his stereo camera and related sundry in my collection. Another person I knew who was also a big stereo camera buff was Ray Walston (that's how I first got to know Ray in 1984).

Not only did Frank sing with the orchestra but he was excellent as a jazz singer. He knew how to finesse his songs-- riffing on the beat of the lyrics, using his voice like a jazz instrument. I really discovered Frank when our band had to learn how to do a "Vegas" style act for the first dinner set. I discovered how talented not only Frank was, but also the priceless musicians in these bands back when big band was king. It still is in my heart.

Contessa, I can imagine you dressing to the nines and sitting at a club table sipping on a martooney-- so dry it has dust on the olive...

Nothing like actually having to do something new to fully appreciate what it takes to be proficient in that field. I played in symphonic bands, big bands, marching bands, pit orchestras, bluegrass, country, and rock bands, and just about every type of performing group over the years. In every case I discovered things about music I hadn't quite learned or mastered and gained a new respect for those folks who were experts in that style.

He always had the best musicians behind him. He knew the arrangements and what he could do besides sing them straight. I've played in big bands that had copies of some of those arrangements. Unfortunately, the singers didn't have Sinatra's feel for the songs and doing them 'straight' didn't cut it.

I always got the impression that Leica cameras were somewhat more delicate than Nikon, which were built like a tank. Nikon also had a good service network in place.

Canon digital cameras are held in high regard by some pros.

IME the M5 was a money pit if / when it needed service. The M6 was a little much but supercool, the M4 was battle-worthy. The jones I never satisfied was ownership of a Leica CL

Why when I could buy an Alembic bass for about the same price?



Pass on both.

I go by the abbreviated phrase....WWDDP....aka...What Would Duck Dunn Play?

So why are Alembic basses so expensive? Because their hardware and electronics are proprietary. I am not sure that an Alembic bass is 8x's a better bass than a custom Fender? But hey, whatever blows your hair back.

Note: Edited to show Alembic bass, not guitar......

Also, I might find both of the above items to be ridiculously priced, but I did spend $500 for a pair of Rolling Stones tickets (which I got refunded due to Covid) but I am sure folks would laugh at me paying that much to see a bunch of GOF's play music.....albeit GREAT music.....
