Perfect for a GOF kind of morning. African cichlids.
Ex #2 (prior to becoming an ex) bought me a gorgeous tall hexagonal tank for Christmas one year. Went to the pet store and made the fateful decision to stock it with cichlids. Two years later, we were up to nine tanks! I'd bought none of them. Came home from a business trip once to find 2 guys caring a 1500 gallon custom tank up to my bedroom, where they set it on a custom base with a custom pump and filtration system built in it. Nice surprise for me! Ka-ching. Ka-ching. Ka-ching.
Couple of years later, she mentioned to me that it looked like the first floor ceiling in her studio (she was a spectacularly good artist) was sagging.
I was on the local city council at the time, and asked one of the local builders I knew to take a look at it. Of course, the master bedroom wall didn't line up with the studio wall on the first floor, and the aquarium was pulling down the upstairs ceiling with it. The builder suggested that I don't stand underneath the aquarium. Said he'd send someone over to take care of it.
The next morning, just after I'd gotten in the shower, two guys showed up with house jacks, a couple of 4x4s and 2 2x12s that were the full length of the room.
They jacked up the ceiling (second level floor and its ceiling), put the 4x4s in the opposing walls, mounted the 2x12s on them, and dropped the ceiling to level.
All before I finished with my shower!
And I could never get the builder to send me a bill. Good thing the newspapers never found out. The only 'graft' I ever took. Those extra long 2x12s must have been expensive. And I tried multiple times to pay him. Oh, well.
My experience with cichlids ended when my experience with her ended.
