I can’t sing.
I always said that, too. I read a quote a long time ago where Grace Slick said that she always thought she had a four note range until she became a singer. I felt like that. Then I joined an unauditioned church choir with a director who knew how to coach. I learned a lot, and within a year was singing with six groups -- that choir, two auditioned community choruses, a bluegrass gospel band, an auditioned a cappella 12 voice sacred ensemble, and a jazz octet, with a doo-wop quartet subset. I did that for a period of about four years, with some musical theatre thrown in for good measure, and they were some of the most musically diverse, fun and satisfying times I've ever had. Before that I would have told you I couldn't sing. The truth turned out to be that I hadn't really tried beyond singing with whatever was on the car radio. Today I say I can't sing and play bass at the same time, though I can sing and play piano, organ or guitar at the same time. I can't talk at the same time I play those instruments, though. I recently tried singing while playing bass and the results were mixed, with better ability if my bass part is simple. So it looks like it might be something I could learn if I needed to. It's a cool feeling to harmonize with other voices. Goose-bumpy when it's exactly right.

Maybe because I started piano lessons and singing in the church choir around the same time, the singing came naturally. In high school I played clarinet and sax(not at the same time), but continued in the choir. Once I picked up bass(67), there was a time of becoming comfortable with it, then the singing resurfaced-sometimes outta necessity-first harmonies, then leads. Now I can sing and play almost any song I'm required to except for a few with intricate bass lines vs offbeat lyrics. Oddly enuff, one is "Get Ready". IDK why, just can't do both on that one.

I'm not entirely certain I ever used a microphone before.
So, you're sayin' that you're just a mic owner?

Every time you talked on the phone...

All the world's a stage
Guys! Gals! If you want all the world to be a stage, use a megaphone!

I can’t sing.
I can't dance.

Traditionally when cooking, songs were sung, there were ceremonial dances, prayers were recited. This is how things were timed. Every week, when I make bread, I have songs and exercises that time the various steps. When I’m scrubbing my hands, I have a thirty second song.

Waiting outside an occupied washroom can make me break into a dance. The type of dance depends on the urgency.

I guarantee you that whenever I cook something, prayers are being said. Mostly by those who will be eating.
