LOL. I think you are correct!
I just had an "ah-ha" moment. I was running speaker wires, FM antenna cable, and stuff the other year and remembered a junction box close to where I ran the wires into the wall header. The outlets on that wall are on the same circuit as the bad outlet. The problem might be there. I'll give it a go tomorrow.
If you have a portable AM radio, tune it between stations and hold it close to panels, junction boxes, outlets, lamp fixtures, even wire runs behind the wall. The radio will act as an EMI noise detector and make more static when there’s a problem spot. It will help narrow down problem spots.
Another concern is if they installed both copper and aluminum wire. There are special measures required for joining them.
