The Youngbloods didn’t have a lot of well known songs other than Get Together. Live, they would milk it and extend it with solos. After 20 or 30 minutes it would wear thin. It was a good song financially that helped set the mood in films and TV.

I played a solo as an intro and outro to my arrangement of "Maiden Voyage" which we did as a vocal tune. The intro/outro is an interpretation of the melody. I played the line and transcribed it as I played. It varies a little each time I play it.

Playback from Finale (MP3). There is silence from 3:27 to 5:13. That's the solo section and I didn't write horn backgrounds for this tune or write out/copy the rhythm section parts. The vocal part is the choir "ohs" (gotta love it!). The horn parts are vibes since the horns sounds are a little cheesy.

I like the electronic voices. It reminds me of 10cc’s masterpiece, I’m Not In Love.

Up in the attic again. The junction box in question was not the problem and found it wasn't even on the circuit in question. This is becoming a treasure hunt! Blown in insulation to dig in, follow a wire, dig some more, and wear an N95 mask, too! Whoopeeee!

No more digging today. Hunt for treasure again tomorrow.

There was a marriage counselor scene in a Woody Allen film (can't recall which movie, but it was an earlier one) where his wife says, (paraphrasing here) "We're always having sex, like three times a week", whereas Woody says, "We almost never have sex, only like three times a week".

I'm trying to imagine what it would be like if the "percussion" (washboard) player were playing the sousaphone, instead.

Here is a vocal version that was the template for our version. Dianne Reeves - can't go wrong with her stuff. Our vocalist does a great job with it!


"Maiden Voyage" is the third tune I've done as 12/8 Afro-Cuban. Such a great groove. I think it's cool to keep the melody tempo close to the original then have the 12/8 groove driving underneath. "Naima" and "Caravan" are the other two in 12/8.

Everyone solos the head once is the rule of thumb I know. And I thought this was interesting in that regard

as the guest tuba player ignores the rest of the band and blows on through.

With just the 4 of us-sometimes 5-it's usually head twice, each guy solos twice, head twice, and ending made while you wait. Not written in stone.

The only bass solo necessary is to stop playing before it. Let them know what they are missing .

I dig the good solos. When Christian McBride takes a solo it is not boring...especially when it’s arco . He just cooks!
I don’t see the reason for such attitudes about bass or other instruments taking solos that normally take supportive roles in a tune. If they have something to say, say it.

I kid about it, but I'm not a melodic player and I'm not particularly "fancy", i.e. chords and stuff. I'll often 'pass' when pointed to if I don't think it'll add anything but time to the performance.
Maybe next time I'll whip out my ocarina and play the solo from "Wild Thing".

You are looking at it through the eyes and ears of a musician. Most other people want to unwind and be entertained, if they listen to the band at all.
