Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

A little sad today. Dick Reade, the guy who hired me for my first real job in '74 passed away at age 98. He flew a P38 reconnaissance aircraft in WWII and got into crop dusting after the war. He founded Mid-Continent Aircraft in Hayti, MO in 1949. Mid-Continent is primarily ag aircraft sales and service but for a number of years they restored Boeing PT17 Stearman aircraft.

Here is Mid-Cont's website. Click the pic at the left for a biography of Mr. Reade.
MidContinent Aircraft Corp

My first job at Mid-Cont was in the maintenance and parts departments handing work orders, inventory, etc. In '76 I was asked if I wanted to work with computers. Well, yeah! I had a successful IT career because of Mr. Reade taking a chance on a 20 yr old that knew nothing.

I miss the occasional Stearman rides from back then. Mr. Reade would take the staff up for a ride and aerobatics once in a while. Tons of fun! I also got to fly with him to Kankakee, IL to deliver a Stearman to a customer and pick up one as a trade in. Great trip and a wonderful airplane. Here is a pic of the Stearman we flew to the customer.

Thank you for this

I think the entire moniker GOF, comes from the fact, that as we get older, we realize that filtering what we want to say, is time consuming, and time is no longer a luxury. I saw this with my grandparents, and other older relatives, in that they would say things to people, which would have gotten a much younger person, a challenge to fisticuffs (Yeah I heard it) but they didn’t care if someone was offended, embarrassed, or anything else. I find myself drifting further and further into that camp, as the years tick by, at an ever increasing rate.

[Unfiltered]

I observe that without a filter, some people show themselves to be, well, not very nice people at all. It may be discourteous to tell someone "you need a wash". Lying to, and then berating a fast food employee for stating no breakfast items are available outside posted breakfast hours is ... just ...
<smh>
I see people treat waitstaff horribly. Same for cashiers. And so on. I trust it doesn't require a great deal of cognitive power to understand it's maybe not the best idea to alienate people handling your food. I trust it's not necessary to read a book to understand that's another human being ...? Apparently not. Grump.

Most recent voluntary expedition into the world of television entertainment was when X-Files was new. Turned off the set, gave the set away, unplugged the cable, and paid extra for cable internet because there's no television attached.

Found myself in a fierce argument (that nobody won) over Breaking Bad. It is I who states no interest. It is I who relents and watches one episode.
<smh>
We've not spoken since.

In those days before j school, I've a full dose of Hollywood, just like the IV line and it's pretty darn hallucinatory to me. There are no NDAs involved but it helps not at all if I sound all, like, having seen something you haven't. I know you see it. And it makes not a silver pin of difference to me where you find meaning and enjoyment so long as you're not hurting anyone <shrug> or attempting to control anyone.

In the other community in which I share, it's the first day of summer. Unless you're @bobyoung53 then it's the first day of winter. We've got sciencey types here @Winslow and Beltane is the astrological cross quarter. Halfway between the equinox and the solstice is the alignment of our planet in relationship to the sun. So what do we all do ...

This will do
for I'm certain there are celebrations there right now, having joined them myself
and still in a wee bit of a lockdown but immunized

Happy Beltane day (if that is the proper greeting for it).

Yeah, I may have been a little misleading, none of my relatives, were ever cruel, or demeaning, they simply bypassed the societal norms of diplomacy, at times. Often speaking about things others may have found inappropriate. I believe that the fact that someone may have been offended, never occurred to them. But at the same time, they would not have lost sleep over the fact.

Thank you for this

I have a friend I've known since about age 14, pretty much like a brother. He has no filter. Don't ask him what he thinks about anything remotely controversial unless you are prepared.

We were on a scooter trip back in 2010. We spent the night in Clayton, NM and met a couple of guys with custom bikes they were taking to a show/rally in the area. Really nice scooters. The bikes were on a flat bed trailer that had seen better days. We were at breakfast with one of the guys talking about the bikes. My friend said "Well you would think if you spent that much money on a bike you could at least have a better trailer." Geez. There was nothing that prompted that comment. The other guy and I just sat there with our mouths hanging open. My friend went on like nothing happened.

The Sopranos was the first modern series I've ever watched, of course I had read the reviews when it was current and knew the premise and knew people who swore by it but I thought ah, that's BS, it can't be that good, then Covid hit, got locked up out here and got HBO and started with that. First show was so so, second etc. by the 5th or 6th show it really started to get good, it was so good after a while it was scary, not the show, my reaction to it. The ending was almost a traumatic experience. :laugh:

Breaking bad, I thought ah, another exploitation show about meth, meth dealers etc, will be boring, but I had nothing better to do so started watching it. Same thing it took a while for it to grow on me but that one also probably had me on the edge of my chair more than anything (including movies) I had ever watched before, it was amazing. Better Call Saul tells the story leading up to Breaking Bad and it too is very good. Curb Your Enthusiasm was wicked funny and a new season is coming out sometime this year, Schitt's Creek is also hilarious.
A lot of my faves are shows Aaron Sorkin did...Sports Night, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, The Newsroom, West Wing. He's didactic and elitist and preachy, but dayum if the dude cant write.

Had lasagna leftover from the other night for supper. Pino noir for me, chardonnay for the Mrs. Listening to Jonathan Edwards on LP then call a friend, then watch boxing on TV.

I have this album on vinyl. The local Classic Rock radio station here (96.9 WLAV) has been playing this song every Friday since I can remember. The station would call it "The Friday Song". I just call it a good song. I learned the harmonica part back in my harp days. Another song on the album is "Sunshine", his most famous song.

He played my old high school during the early 70's and I being the cool rocker was too good to go, probably missed a good show. He lived somewhere in Mass at that time.

For me, "Honkey-Tonk Stardust Cowboy" is the ultimate country song. :cool: Nothing like sitting around the shanty and puttin' a good buzz on. ;)
