In 1963, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young hung out together at coffee houses, each writing great songs. An underaged kid traveling to small town dives. Neil met Stephen Stills around then when Stephen was on the circuit. These coffee houses were small places, a capacity of a hundred was huge. So many talented people.

Here is Joni doing a song written by friend John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. It was a tight community.

That entire live concert in LA is excellent. As were the albums she did with Jaco et al from that time period. And the "Mingus" album too. I got to see her at the Atlantic City Pop Festival in '69 two weeks before Woodstock. I was supposed to go to Woodstock too but, well, don't ask. It's a shame her health has precluded her from performing.

Here's another version of "Me and My Uncle" by another band you may have heard of. :D

The Dead and the various players that cycled through the band (and offshoot projects) were pretty heavy bluegrass guys too. I did a bunch of gigs with John Dawson and the New Riders of the Purple Sage many years ago. There was a lot of rock, folk and bluegrass mixed together in those sets. There were some funny and a little embarrassing with these shows as well. My old college roommate joined us as the opening act, this was of course before the legalization of pot... and John co-wrote "Panama Red"... I got called backstage from FOH in a panic because I just had to try out this or that new weed. Sure glad I knew the music like the back of my hand or those shows would have been tough to mix under these conditions. He was a super nice guy to hang with.

Don't offer your PA system (don't even tell them you have one!) I was in a band that in the end turned the only reason I was in it was because I owned the PA. :spit:

The first time I saw Joni was the Shadows and Light tour! :hyper: :D
I got into alternate tuning due to her. :) I rarely play in standard tuning, anymore (we're talking guitar, here).

I went to see a Joni Mitchell tribute act on Saturday. A Helsinki-based singer Laura Sippola was the "Joni" of the show. She played piano and sang. The whole band was composed of professional touring musicians. The bass player did a reasonable Jaco impression on fretless, the guitar was dead-on, drums subdued, the sax player played in a very credible Tom Scott style. A great evening at a venue suitable for the music.

Reasons to be cheerful instead of grumpy:

Part one:

On Saturday, my dog Hunky caught a raccoon dog ("tanuki") while we were looking for moose tracks and pinned it into a thicket where I could advance and shoot it. Even though we didn't find any moose, the dog did a textbook performance on the critter.

Part two:

I was at a tower stand yesterday and a moose calf came into sight some 30 meters away. Even though my shot got a bad angle from a twig, the calf was found dead within 100 m. This was the last of our permits, now we can hang out weekends drinking egg nog instead of freezing off digits one by one.

Part three:

Gall bladder pain has subsided so I am fully functional again. Band practice tonight!

Was that at the Paramount? If so, I was at that concert too! I was at UW. :-)

I love Joni Mitchell and her music. She is an excellent musician and has championed a lot of great causes in her career.

Well tomorrow is the big day for youse guys in the States. From our perspective up here north of the border, it’s been disgusting. Everything I dislike about politics has been front and centre in this race. <sigh> I guess we’ll soon find out if Canada has to build a wall to keep you refugees out! :(

I’m no fan of Clinton but I cannot imagine a world where someone the likes of Trump would be President! What was it he asked? If we can’t use nukes why do we have them?

Politics is like making sausage... you really don't want to look too close at what goes into either because it will turn your stomach!

Coincidentally, last evening Dorothy and I watched a Martha cooking show that featured an expert making sausage. Nothing but the best ingredients went into it. By the time the show was done I was really hungry! :) I’m glad we don’t have “Smellevision!" :D
