I used to have a '66 Bassman I bought for a project amp and the two JBL D130Fs that were in it. Amp was is pretty good condition overall. Both speakers needed a recone but that wasn't obvious until I opened it up. D'oh. Anyways, had fun working on it - new filter caps, tubes, and made a new baffle board. Sold the two JBLs for 400 and the amp with new Jensen C12Ns for 750 to a young guitar player and his dad. With parts and stuff, I might have made a few bucks. Great amp for guitar, not so much bass.

I bought a blackface '67 Dual Showman in 1970-71 that had spent a lot of its life in a barn, it was in nice shape except that the surrounds on the JBL D-130's were rotted probably from moisture and cold. I fixed them......with newspaper and glue and made two big giant tweeters out of them, the cones were immovable, thus begun and ended my home made recone business. I didn't even know speakers could be reconed back then. I threw some Radio Shack 15"s in it and used them for some years, I never got the D-130's reconed until years later.

JBL D130Fs

Wonder what the difference was between D130 and D140's I had in my amp back then? The 2-D140's handled bass very well with my 60 w Dynaco tube amp.

I didn't even know speakers could be reconed back then. I threw some Radio Shack 15"s in it and used them for some years, I never got the D-130's reconed until years later.

I had one of my 2 63 Bassmans reconed. Put some other(?) 12s in there 'til I got them back. Put the recones back in the cab and put the other 12s in my 69 Ford van w/ a coupla Radio Shack piezo tweeters, built into the front of the 'I built it' bed in the back. Pretty awesome sound for the times.

You are, of course, referring to the new Netflix film "Space Sweepers" from Korea. Set in 2092. It's a bunch of competing space garbage collectors. And there's a LOT of it to collect. The effects are good, but a bit over-the-top, like Transformers. Acceptable entertainment.

Ah hah! No I had not seen that, thanks for bringing it to my attention, I will check it out. Meanwhile, the debris issue is real and growing.

I bought four 8" coaxial speakers (probably from Radio Shack) and cut holes in the rear deck of my 61 Chevy when I was a kid for my Panasonic 8 track. It sounded pretty good until one of my buddies spilled his beer into them one night. It was a nice car, two door bubble top Impala with a 283, I destroyed it.

Ah. Memories. First car I owned was a 62 Impala ragtop, 327/Powerglide. The previous owner had used it to take prospective real estate buyers from Miami to the Naples/Ft. Myers area, and had had it re-geared with a very high rear end. The thing was a pig off the line, but would cruise at 85-90 and not break a sweat. Great car. I got hit-and-runned in it and it f---*ed up the suspension. Traded it for a 63 Volvo PV 544.

That was my experience with most older bass amps. Two of my least favourite were a '59 4x10 Bassman that my dad and I kept for about a month, and the Ampeg B15's they had at in the ensemble rooms at college.

A little over 50 years of playing bass, only completely happy with my amplification for the last 10 or 15.

As far as I'm concerned, we're living in a golden age of bass, gear-wise.

Lot's of good stuff out there these days. I had a harp player friend that sat in with us a couple times in the late '90s that had a tweed Bassman 4x10. Killer amp for that use.

Nice cars, love both, I had a bunch of Chevy's, '61, '64, '65, '70, '72.. most were 283 Impalas until the 1970 when they were 350's. A friend and I (mostly him) took the 350 out of the '70 Belair and put it in a '69 Nova along with the three speed auto transmission and put dual exhaust on it, that thing moved. I finally sold it because I went to school and it was eating up too much gas and sold it to a friend, his wife rolled it and totaled it.

There was one of those in a music store in my area that I considered buying-'til I tried to lift it. Nope.
The first amp I played through was a 7ender Super Reverb(yeah, I know, Guitar amp-it's what the Navy issued). EB-3 on Mudbucker. Never loud enuff to break anything.(PDB trio)

I had both, from what I could see the outer suspension on the D-140's had a couple of extra ripples in it (technical talk ), they were more complaint for bass.

You never owned an SVT? Not everyone agrees with me but still the best IMHO, first ones were made in 1969, only problem with them is that they're heavy but still nothing compares with them soundwise except a B-15 which are still used in recording studios all over the world.

My first car that I drove regularly was a 1941 Oldsmobile hydromatic.

1st one I bought was a 1965 Buick Special, coupe. Surprisingly, my Acoustic 301 cab fit in the 2 door back seat.

I think I've mentioned that I bought a mid 70s blue line SVT/810 rig when we started a gig at a Miami Beach hotel(the Marco Polo). I was never particularly impressed by it. I tried all kinda different settings. Couldn't get the sound I wanted. I shoulda saved the $$$ and used my Kasino.(Not a file pic. Mine, about 15' from me)

I added this to my post before I saw yours but for you : " Not everyone agrees with me" I've always thought they were best for Fenders though, very good at that crisp, tight sound with a lot of bottom.

Yeah, maybe it and my 67 NR Thunderbird weren't a good match for what we were doing(very commercial).

I'm not sure, I know when I plugged my EB-3 into it I couldn't get a good sound either but I didn't try very long. I went from a Fender to a Marshall then to the Ampeg which have (I think) active tone controls at least the middle control and it took me a while to get a handle on them, a little goes a long way with them and actually I had a humbucker Tele bass when I first got it. @beans-on-toast knows more than I do about them. I think I just didn't experiment with it enough though at first. I finally started setting it flat and went from there in every room, it was a lot easier. I finally just bought another Marshall Major head, can't wait to try that out, very smooth sound out of those things especially with a Gibson, Listen to this thing:
