Bye-Bye, old driveway!

That doesn’t add up. You collect old things.

Cobblestones or wooden driveway by any chance?

WLW in Cincinnati is still authorized for 500,000 Watts. During the day, they use 25,000 Watts and crank it up to 50,000 at night. Since they are one of 5 national emergency radio stations (a hold over from the Cold War) they can boost the signal to 500,000 Watts. Their tower is about 3 miles from where we live. There are US Army soldiers stationed there round the clock and the entire area is cordoned off with concertina wire fencing.

I have a military R390A like the one below. It was a fun restoration. (I’ve had an old style long wire antenna and a G5RV dipole.)

There are far fewer AM stations on the air today than there used to be.

There was a broken 390 on my ship that I resurrected sitting off the coast of Beirut. It was a great receiver, used it for MARS calls after I got it back in shape.

You need one of these to go with the R-390. Note-runs on 440VAC 3 phase. ;)

I had a vanity plate for an old nickname of mine-FLICK. At a slight angle it looked like something else. I got a ship(sp?) load of questions about that, so I let it go.
Many moons ago, I had an Illinois vanity plate with "XXIXII" on it. Nobody seemed to get it. Until one day when I was heading home. I'd just cleared the final toll booth by O'Hare and was in the left lane of the Kennedy. Two guys in a late-model Cadillac came flying by in the breakdown lane. With the limp-along spare on the right-front wheel. Windows down. The passenger yelled out "Rush" and pumped his fist on the way by. Finally! Someone got it!

Nice. I might have seen one of those at Fair Radio Sales.
It's a URT-23 HF AM/SSB/CW transmitter. It has a pair of mushroom tubes in a push pull config. I had one in the Aux Radio room that I used for MARS calls(1/2 duplex phone patches set up by stateside ham operators) that I kept fresh tubes in. Tuned up and pushed to the max I could get 1700 watts in CW out of fresh tubes. They didn't last long tho. I didn't care, I wanted guys to talk to their families. :D

Advertising = the dark side of capitalism. I could rant for hours, but I'll spare us and just not go there. ;)

Aw, come on... You know you want to. You fingers are tapping on the keyboard, just itching to form words. You'll feel better at first, then you'll second guess what you wrote, you'll want to change it but the edit time has passed which ticks you off even more but that doesn't matter since someone has already quoted it.
