Aaaaargggh....

For my own purposes, I could happily do most things I enjoy on a 10 year old computer.

Trouble is, my day job is features training and IT support for a small veterinary software company. Dual platform, Mac and Windows. I've been doing this for the last 10 years, and over the last 5 years or so, annual OS updates on the Mac side have been giving me a massive compatibility wedgie.

For a given version of our database engine, many of our clients are down to a two or three year span, in terms of which version of OS X or MacOS will run their software package.

I've taken to running old operating systems as virtual machines in VMWare. Otherwise, I'd need 3 or 4 Macs plus a Windows computer at my desk, just to do features support....

Oooh but those VMs would run so much faster on a new M1 powered Mac, right? You so need one! Right away!

OK, I'm going to post this here instead of Bassists of the 60s, 'cause these are dudes from the '70s and beyond. Fun jam! I saw Larry Graham live once in the mid-70s when he toured his first solo album. Super show!

Verdine - saw him in 1973 with EW&F. They opened for Stevie Wonder (not so little, anymore).

Larry - Only saw him once when we met briefly at O'Hare sometime in the '70s.

Marcus - Saw him at the first show of the first tour of SMV with a couple of other bass blokes (don't recall who they were...).

Verdine has loooong fingers. Gifted players often do. There are certainly exceptions. Elton has stubby fingers and yet he knows his way around a keyboard.

Got a pic tooken with the last 3 original EWF members at a meet&greet a few years ago. Verdine was one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. Told him about my 67 NR Gibson TBird . His eyes lit up. Cool dude.

My TV is a 32" that I got at Costco five years ago. I rarely remember that it exists. I have Roku to go with it.

My current DVD player is an ancient Sony that works reliably. It replaced a slightly-less-ancient Panasonic that was so slow to respond to any input (remote or on unit) that it was impossible to tell if/when it was going to do anything.

My laptop is 11 years old. The chromebook I'm typing this on is five years old. Yes, I have to hand crank it on cold mornings.

lol. That's what I said a couple of years after CDs came out. There is nothing wrong with my cassettes! And nothing wrong with my 286 PC.

My PC is 2013 vintage, Dell XPS 8500 Intel i5. Never had any trouble with it. Even Win10 has been okay. Wife's laptop is a Dell Inspiron 2014 vintage, also no problems. We bought a Dell Dimension for the wife's folks back in 2004 to play games. Win 95 baby! It's only been connected to the internet once to get the SP2 update. It still works fine.

My biggest issue with computers is when work related programs that I use are no longer supported on that model. That's when I know I have to upgrade.

Same here. I still can't get the Netscape browser to run.

My interweb and cable TV are from the same company. If I were to go 'cafeteria' for the TV part, it would cost even more. Might change one day, but the service is pretty decent. And like many GOF's, change is considered a PITA.

We've had UVerse from my former employer since 2010. Pretty reliable. Internet and phones from them, too.

Speaking of phones, we'll have to give up our flip phones by Feb '22 when 3G is no longer supported. Oh, well. We saw this advertised on the TV the other day - Galaxy Z Flip & Z Flip 5G Folding Smartphone | Samsung US

We'll have to go to the former employer store to do the touchy feely and see if it's worth the price - $1200. yikes.

I have a pretty good scrap wood collection myself. I have trouble tossing it out. Who knows when you might need that 13" piece of quarter round or that 7x15 piece of 3/4 plywood.

Oh, my. An older iPhone would be my choice. Picked up an iPhone 6s for $150 at the beginning of this year. That and Consumer Cellular is saving me a bunch.

I've been using Consumer Cellular for years. Much smaller monthly bill. I used to pay around $85 a month for just myself on AT&T. Now, I and Mrs. Tango are both on the same CC plan for $64.

My wife and I are at $58 per month on CC in the US. If/when we travel to Canada, I understand we will need a T-Mobile chip. Don't know what that will cost.
