An interesting story behind California Dreaming. Different than the way the band told it. The song was written by John Phillips. He woke up Michelle and said listen to this. She helped him polish it and he gave her a song writing credit. They moved out to California and didn't make it big right away. The band sung background on some studio records and played clubs for a year.
Barry McGuire was a friend, he brought them in to sing background vocals on the song that he was recording. He did release the song on one of his albums. Nobody knew them. The instruments were done by the wrecking crew. Joe Osborn played bass on the track. They had time to kill while were finishing the basic tracks. The band went into the next studio to work on the vocals. It was all just dumb luck. Lou Adler came in and heard them. He decided to sign them and release it under their own name. It became their first recorded song.
Classic Tracks: The Mamas & The Papas' "California Dreamin'"
