From the tenor of the questions, I believe the bone density technician was asking me to eat chocolate.
My internet/tv/phone supplier never fails to squeeze money out of me. I used to have a $10 month off bundle deal because I had internet and TV. They offered this for years. Over a period three months they four notices saying that it would be reduced that to $7, a month later to $5, then to $3.50, in August it will be $0.
Every month there seems to be a new surprise. There are often better deals that they don't notify you of. I just found out that 10X the internet speed costs the same as what I'm paying now. They didn't send a notice for that.
Enough of this. Digital highways should be free to all.

Those last videos caused me to remember a concert video I haven't watched in a long time. Anna Maria Jopek is a Polish jazz vocalist. The story behind this concert is that she and her partner/band mate were major fans of Pat Metheny. They went to Norway IIRC to see one of his shows, met with him backstage and asked permission to cover some of his songs with self-written vocals. Not only did he agree, he sat in on their concert! Enjoy!
EDIT: The album and concert name is Upojenie. In Polish it means "intoxicated", as in "intoxicated with you."
EDIT 2: So happy to have this on YouTube. The version I have on disc is PAL-encoded, and suffered playback issues when converted to NTSC. This version is smooth. Routed now through my main mixing monitors.
EDIT 3: Bonus for GOF bassists! The bass player is center stage, right behind Metheny. LOTS of good shots!

If not a specific fee, then it would be taxes on everyone. Sort of like public school - we don't have kids but still pay the taxes. I don't necessarily have a problem with that but it would have to be equitable across different income levels.

It's now an essential service that the government should provide, just like roads and bridges.
I don't think that it will happen for a long time. Phone companies are long established and make a lot of money, shareholders and employees do very well. They are too powerful. Unfortunately, their greed is out of hand. At least the government is forcing them to provide better high speed service in rural areas. That progress is coming way to slowly.

If you want a better deal, just call them and threaten to cancel...
I've done that. After a long time on hold, they offer a one year rebate and then raise the fees. The competition is not as good.
I pay $85 for TV and $85 internet, $90 for a cell phone. I cancelled my $50 landline and I'll soon eliminate the TV cost. Forty-five years ago I watched my TV via an antenna and my phone bill was around $15. Mail involved pen, paper, and a stamp.

It included a dedicated group of handlers and carriers, who viewed it as their almost sacred duty to deliver their charges in a timely fashion.
It would seem a substantial number of them today, (by no means, all) consider the efforts for which they are remunerated, to be somehow "interfering" with the activities that truly capture their interest.
Just my 2¢.

I remember when a standard letter was 5¢. Delivery was two days. A friend became a postal carrier. He retired at 55 with a good pension that is indexed to inflation. It turned out to be a very good job.

Did you have to be bonded to carry mail?
Hmmm....That in itself seems like a valid reason to dismantle the sorting machines.
