What makes you think the bow-tie boy is me? LOL. It is. I was mostly jesting about the plague and it would be inappropriate for some gigs. But the content of that plaque has been my unwritten policy for some time now. It may seem harsh but it's how I feel after experiencing countless episodes where musicians and non-musician types have tried to strong-arm their way onto the bandstand. For the record, when I go to hear my friends perform I never get up and play even if asked. Never. Unless it’s a jam. Yeah, I'm grumpy. Get over it.

S#!^ that makes me grumpy lately here on TB is these kids crying about string spacing and weight.

Does the difference between 18.5 & 19mm really make that much of a damn difference to any other older players here? Am I missing something on that?

Or if your bass weighs one ounce over 9 lbs 2 oz it's too heavy. I get it that nobody wants a 25 lbs bass but come on, seriously?

Little squirrels I tell ya.

I guess I'm just having a day where I hate everybody....again.

I have a P Bass at 9.2 lbs , an Ibby at 7.6 and a Cort at 7.2. the nuts get narrower with each one. I play the P because it is the best sounding one of the three. Went to see a friends band last night and they brought me on stage for a couple songs playing their bass players Jazz. Doesn't matter to me which one I play , they are all easy for me so yeah , I don't see what all the stink is about nut widths and weight.
The ice is melted from my back door and the hose has thawed out. Get off my lawn ....... or else.:eyebrow:

Ahh there's the rub, you were there to play bass NOT to comment on the size, shape, color, width or whatever of the instrument. Novel idea,, more of this younger generation should try it. Maybe one day they'll become a bass player====lord knows we're still trying!

For the record.....It was a jazz , I play a P....It was white , mine is brown...It had rounds on it , I use flats.....The strap was shorter that I usually play with. None of these things made a hill of beans to me. I was up on stage with some friends and wouldn't have cared if they handed me an old tub with one string on it. I was having a good time.
Hey kid..... just play the darn thing and quit complaining.............and get off my lawn:eyebrow:

Congratulations farts. Y'all've got about the only thread on TB I make sure and check in on every time I get on here. Never seen more pearls of wisdom gathered in one place. If 50 is the cutoff, I'll be joining in about 9 years. :D


You know how you hear old people talking about how everything is going to hell these days?.......that's because it is. :)

I just can't wait until I'm as old and grumpy as you guys. If people start refering to me and the old lady as "grumper and grumpette", my work here is done. :)

So so true. The arguments or conversations that go on and on about the smallest little details- it's kinda nuts. It's the not so old adage- "More Mel Bay, Less eBay". Focus on the playing, and any instrument will sing.

If anything, it is the grumpy old fart contingent that you would think would be more concerned about the ergonomics of an instrument.

With that in mind, yes, due to the type of repertoire, and the lowering of the key of certain songs as a concession to our lead singer, and after playing 4-strings for over 30 years, I finally got a 5-string. It made me grumpy to have to shop for one. And yes, I did research weight, pickup placement, cost/features, neck width, nut width, etc. I have posted my recommendations on numerous 5-string threads on the forum. I ended up with a 2011 Ibanez SRA305, which is a surprisingly good instrument and very giggable at its discounted NOS clearance sale price point. Then I got grumpy figuring out what this B-string-thing was all about, but finally got there.

Now, if I could only get the cash together for Jerome Little to make me a 16* helix, half-fanned 33 1/4 to 34 1/4 scale, EMG 40CS, a light Pacific wood body, like Philippine mahogany, or even agathis (which is what the SRA305 is made of -- under appreciated broad tonal spectrum good tone wood, half-way between Honduran mahogany and Spanish cedar in its characteristics) body with tiger sycamore top, purpleheart wood stringer neck....
