NY should rightly be called The Big Oyster. Natives lived on them back to 7000BC. There were mountains of shells. Blame them for starting it.

I had an 18hp Craftsman tractor when we lived in StL. If you let the clutch out too quick in 5th gear it would do that. Scared the crap out of me the first time. Then it was fun!

Growing up near the Chesapeake Bay, we used to encounter these deposits of oyster shells all the time. I never knew there was any historical significance to them until much later in life. Now I wish I remembered where I had seen them but it seemed like they were everywhere.
Since they're everywhere you can pick any place and you'd be right!
Probably true! There are lots of little estuaries off the bay that probably hosted native populations in the past and have local beaches where people who live nearby will swim. I'd see these deposits frequently when visiting those kinds of areas. As a kid I just thought maybe some earlier generations had a party there. Never occurred to me that they'd be linked with more ancient cultures.

When I was in the US Navy my ship was in Norfolk Virginia. My shipmate Dan had a Vietnamese wife, and we would go out on the Bay in a John boat and crab for blue crabs. Jing Jing would boil those crabs up in this giant pot she had, holy smokes that was good.
