I loved the microprocessor revolution. Always something new to read about or try.
Quarterdeck had me multitasking programs on a IBM XT before Windows. I swapped a 286 motherboard for the first 386 in my department and QEMM 386 let me run Windows and non-Windows programs simultaneously with hotkey switching.
Our IT dept was always happy to help me hotrod my company PC, even connecting to the company network before anyone outside IT. Later they would ''look the other way'' from me when rolling out the rigidly controlled LAN to everyone else. Win 3.11 gave most of my co-workers too much to ''play'' with
I remember MS Bob. Thought it was cute, for kids. Then I saw it being used by adults. At work! Aaugh! IT had made it an option for those who just couldn't fathom Windows, or PCs in general. Luckily, it didn't last long. Oh, the lamentations when it was removed from the network.
My helping others in my dept with their PCs became a blessing and a curse. I learned a lot from their mistakes. But they were soon interrupting my work instead of calling the Help Desk. I also got chosen as my dept's Subject Matter Expert, user-SME, for every computer initiative that came down the pike, some good, some awful. I soon found someone else to be the SME for MS Bob.
When the Help Desk started calling me to help other dept.s, then themselves, I knew I'd gone too far. I enjoyed most of it, but soon learned to convincingly shrug my shoulders, say ''I don't know'' and get back to my own work, as I had seen some real IT folks do.
I miss only some of that since retiring.

Of course the flip side to all this is operating systems are so full of bloat ware and worthless crap, they may as well be toys. I really don't need the driver for every piece of equipment devised since the dawn of time pre-loaded (except the stuff I have and use), nor do I appreciate hardware becoming obsolete between the time I buy it and the time I get it home...

Despite all the computer innovations upgrading anything related to MIDI still sends shivers down folks spines. People keep old versions of an OS on their computers because they fear a MIDI driver conflict. They can't afford to have one of their boxes stop working.
I ran into this a while back with a Focusrite box, Logic, and midi. A Mac is usually easy to deal with. It turned out that there was an old MIDI driver from another company that was conflicting with a Focusrite driver. I lost a couple of days on that problem. You'd think that they would have gotten around having these sort of issues by now. But in the end, anything that talks to hardware at a low level can have these sort of issues.

Well, sadly I'm still working-- can't afford to retire yet. Government job you know. Found my ceiling and no possibilities of advancement in a small organization. But, I get union raises every year so that's helped. Anyway, I work with a nice bunch and they're pretty computer savvy. Very friendly, when the pressure's on they don't blow up.
We're working with Server 2016 and starting to roll out Windows 10. Although it's been out for a while some of our legacy programs had to be ported over. I like Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell desktop better than tiles, and I feel the Windows 10 interface is still under construction. It doesn't know what it wants to be yet.
As far as recording and music, even MIDI, I haven't had any problems with Windows 7, 8, or 10. I always install as Administrator to the computer. If it can run on 7 it will run on 10. I think 10 is very invasive and like a little kid won't shut up! But we're working on disabling all dialogs on the OS using workgroup policies. We don't want our computers to talk to our staff or ask them questions-- and staff shouldn't be talking to Cortana! LOL.
I think I was a late bloomer. I didn't really get into computers until 1989 and by then the field had been whittled down to MS and Apple, with a few stragglers. It's been a great career and I would only trade it for something that paid double what I'm making LOL! I still get to come in and receive all the new equipment and set it up before the users, and I get to buy stuff to try it out. However, when I retire, I'm tempted to go the Apple route. Apple rarely updates compared to Windows (once a week) and is reliable, as well as very nicely built stuff....

Classic shell helps all the win OS's that want to look like a phone. Gets you a real menu, configurable and you can export the settings and import to other computers.

I first got into computers out of a vague sense of needing to protect myself. I've never had reason to doubt that it was the right instinct. My inherent distrust of commercialized technology has done nothing but grow. I'm still amazed and baffled by how readily people are willing to surrender any privacy for the convenience of things like social media. Maybe I'm just a paranoid GOF, but I resent things like Facebook, where a company's multi-million dollar value is based on their ability to collect and sell information about me. While I was IT manager (Network Janitor) for a 150 user network, there were only two users who weren't on Facebook. Myself and the other IT guy.
I was recently pissed off by Google when I discovered that the recent update of the Android Google Maps app won't run unless I have location enabled so that they can constantly track my location. I don't need or want targeted advertising updated to tell me that I'm near an Olive Garden that's having a lunchtime special on breadsticks. Even Talkbass gets on my nerves when the Sweetwater ads keep showing me every piece of gear I've looked at in the past month, including a bass that I already bought.

Sooooo, are the breadsticks free or sumpthin'?
Yeah, it's kind of counter to the purpose when the ads start showing items you already have bought. As I recently acquired a $7000 simulation program for work, their ad pops up at regular intervals. Why if I already investd in it (and locked myself to use that, over the competition, forever)?
On talkbass there's a little X on the top right corner of the add. Select it, click on a couple of things, and that ad won't come up any more.
I guess that Later Peter is better than Softer Peter!
