Single channel, kind of klunky user interface, worked ok for the time. I had some of the zone delays of that era, decent average stuff.

I was watching some documentary about divers going under the ice to measure the health of the ocean there. Dude's were tugging on ropes for communication (no walkie talkies). After a while the only diver still topside started suiting up (Marvel style) for a rescue dive. They were also using a tape measure on the ocean floor. The dive team did make it back and data shows WAY to much algae down there. Not only do these guys need a raise, but obviously they are under funded. They were risking their lives for a bit more data about the melting arctic. Mom comes in and declares it a waste of time/money. I said that any science focused on saving the human race was more than worth it. I think 70+ folks rightly think all govt. spending is waste, but when you compare the budget of science research against the military killing research... those guys under the ice with a tape measure are pretty damn cheap... and braver than any soldier.

I don't know about that... pollution (and control thereof) pretty well ignores geopolitical borders, as do exactly 100% of naturally occurring events which always had and always will have a much greater impact.

For example, 1 volcano eruption spews more CO2 in a few weeks than the entire output of our species in 100 yrs. while we shouldn't go out of our we to destroy, we shouldn't bankrupt ourselves doing so

Sadly, topics relating to the environment have been highly p-o-l-i-t-i-c-i-z-e-d over the past 40 years or so. For this reason, I am not stating any opinion here, but ask that for sake of keeping the GOF thread alive, we discontinue this discussion. We have been warned, and I think it's best we heed the warning. We have been given great flexibility here to share and be our grumpy old selves, post OT and we generally don't judge each other. I don't want to see any of us get points, deleted posts, warnings and mostly, I would hate to see the thread get locked. Please go back to our usual grumpiness about life in general, but not the hot and forbidden topics.

Ok, let me start today. Mother's Day. Wife is a precious wonderful beautiful lady. We have four healthy children. Do they call? Sure, when they need money! To be fair they all live out of state, with us in Alaska. The age old lament about the younger generation sure seems to apply to our family. I feel sort of guilty myself because when I first met my wife, we ourselves young pups, she was constantly reminding me to call my mother or send a gift. Now all our parents are gone.

It seems like they're a bit of sociopaths. They are mad that we don't live in Oregon, and upset with us because they feel it's owed to them to send money gifts on every birthday. We used to send them a lot of money when they were younger. But through the years the gifts coming back to her, however small, have stopped. Now the calls are next to none. And talking to other old friends with kids, this doesn't seem to be uncommon. Everyone's too worried about what's going on in FB or Snapchat or whatever.

Once we were stuck in a TGIF restaurant in Salem due to a snow storm. We spotted four young people sitting together at a table. They weren't saying one word. Just texting on their phone. I wanted to walk over and say, "why don't you put down your phones and really CHAT together?" But hey, it's their life.

All you GOF's with wives that are mothers give them a good hug and kiss... they are the givers of life and most often the center of the family.. only my 2 cents of course...

I am miserable. Have been for months. Sick of being sick. I want to do many things, but it seems all year I have no energy, if not outright feeling horrid. I've been in and out of medical places about weekly on average between appointments and tests. I know a lot of you are or have been in worse shape, but I prefer to feel grumpy and look at the dark side. Behind every silver lining, there's a dark cloud that wants to blot out the sun and rain on you.

Today I'm off to see me mum and hopefully have a good time with her, my brothers and their wives. One or two of there kids may be present. Our kids are all four leggers. Right now two kids/8 legs. They never give us anything. They just want my food and poop on the floor when I give in :-\
