I’m fine, thanks, in spite of the most recent lab results (more later) simply because the hot wife and I came to the conclusion that come hell or high water, I’m retiring from day gig end of the year. Early, but whatever.

May we all assume this is not the same day gig that we were discussing earlier in the thread?? ;)

In the spirit of avoiding a TMI situation, I'm just going to assume our good friend is taking a well deserved early retirement to appreciate the finer, most important things in life and leave it at that. :)

Ear/hearing update:
Infection is totally cleared up. Hard to tell but I might have a little more hearing loss. The tinnitus comes and goes in intensity. Good days and bad days. Seems like it might be related somewhat to barometric pressure. Worse on stormy days. I take betahystamine and ginko biloba. Not sure how much it helps. Bottom line: suck it up and keep playing bass till my ears fall off.

I found a new way to guarantee some high level grumpiness. Just start out your week going to the dentist for a cleaning and wind up getting a surprise root canal. That'll be $2800 please. Then find out that your body is starting to break down and absorb the roots of some of your teeth and they'll probably have to get root canals too to try to prevent them from having to be extracted. Sometimes life just sucks.
On the plus side, I'm not having any of the typical post-procedure pain and discomfort that usually comes with a root canal.

I wonder why if you are shooting the Calfs!

Sorry this is just a subject that I cannot imagine. On my weekend trip to a friend’s cottage we saw a doe and two fawns. I was transfixed by the sheer beauty of the scene. Wanting to pull out a gun and kill any of them is something completely alien to me.

The calfs are suspect to the rigors of the wild anyway and have a high natural mortality rate. It is actually humane to cull them in the fall. If we only go for the trophies, the population of the moose will skyrocket, causing damage in the new-growth forests as well as trafic hazards. Even now, the value of hunting to the society is calculated at 30 million euros here in Finland. This year we got 3 moose from the woods beside a heavy traffic road, so everyone should be happy about that.

Moose calfs are not like fawns, they are quite unattractive to look at. It took me about 5 seconds from sighting the cow and the calf to have the calf on the ground with my .308.

I think I would talk to another dentist for second opinion.

While I personally don't and couldn't hunt, I recognize the need for wildlife management and culling that doesn't occur naturally anymore, because we've killed off the predators in so many areas. Without predation or hunting, some species multiply beyond the environment's ability to support them and they destroy the local ecology that they depend on. Then the interactions with humans, and the problems that come with that, increase.

We're lucky enough to live on 7 rural acres, mostly wooded, and have deer, wild turkeys and many other critters wandering through almost daily. I feel privileged to have them around and feel that they have as much right to the land as we do, but I also recognize that without hunting the deer and turkey populations would quickly get out of hand. There are several large parks and nature areas around here where hunting isn't permitted and just about every year they have to hire professional hunters to come in and cull the deer herds to keep them under control. Every year it's accompanied by a loud and misinformed outcry about the cruelty of it, with no apparent consideration of the fact that, since the predators that those same people would be panicking about have been exterminated, there's nothing to prevent the cruelty of letting the deer overgraze and destroy the ecology that they depend on, and slowly starve to death.

Well, the need for the root canal was pretty obvious to me and I'll be going to a specialist about the root resorption, so that'll be the second opinion. Unfortunately, it was pretty obvious on the xrays.
I probably over dramatized the situation a bit (maybe a lot). I went to the dentist last week about the tooth pain. They took xrays and said that I'd likely need a root canal, but they'd have to pop the crown off to see under it. Depending on what they found, they might have to refer me to a specialist. We scheduled a cleaning for yesterday and the procedure to check the tooth out for next week. They also gave me an estimate for the root canal and replacement crown. On the same xrays they showed me where the roots of several teeth were obviously eroding and that I would definitely need to go to the specialist to have that investigated.
So, I went for the cleaning yesterday and they told me that the dentist had a cancellation and offered me the choice of doing the crown removal and possible root canal right after the cleaning. I wasn't expecting it until next week, so I'd have plenty of time to stress about it and get good and nervous. However, I went ahead and did it on the condition that, besides them numbing the hell out it, I'd get nitrous too. Might as well get a buzz while I'm undergoing that fun. It went smoothly and he was able to do the root canal there with minimal discomfort, and it turned out that I haven't had any pain afterward at all. Aside from the $2800 I own them now (imagine what a great bass $2800 would buy!), the first part went ok. Who knows what will result from the visit to the specialist...

Your post made me think. Thinking makes me hungry. Now I gotta go home and have lunch!

An update on undersea exploration. The guys from the research vessel Petrel came over for a long visit and dinner. Robert Kraft is the guy in charge of all undersea exploration for Paul Allen. Also his ROV pilot came too. Amazing. Amazing Amazing. If I was fifteen years younger I would be begging for a job with them.

They both were total gentlemen and super patient with me acting like s kid meeting Santa for the first time. Luckily I had a few good sea stories of my own ( merchant marine) when we swapped life experiences.

One of the first things they did was invite me and my wife and daughter for a private tour of their vessel. So that will be today's adventure.

They mentioned that Paul Allen might make a stop here while they are doing their exploring so I extended an invite to ask Mr. Allen if he would like to come over to our house and jam. Supposedly Paul Allen keeps one of Jimi Hendrix guitars on his three hundred foot yacht the Octopus. LOL.

If you are interested in what they are up to, there is lots of great video of the stuff these guys are doing and interviews with the guys that came over last night at this website:

I'll update later on the ship tour.

I’m not a hunter, either..by choice. I figure those animals never did anything to me, so why should I shoot em?
I mentioned earlier, I don't hunt but I have friends at work that do. I repair computers for fish and venison. Good trade! Some of the best venison in the world is Sitka black tail deer. The closest to pure untouched by man meat you can get. :D
That reminds me of a story from about 20 years ago. One time a friend brought me some deer legs to butcher so I would have a little meat. The legs were sticking out of a box in my car. Friend was with me. Wife asked-- "what's in the box?" Friend replied "Bambie." Wife cried. The box couldn't come into the house. Never happened again... :bag:

I once caught a pheasant in the grille of my car. Wife wouldn't let me gut it for food. I am still bitter.

Okay, we just got back home from our private VIP tour of the reasrarch vessel PETREL. My head is still vibrating. What an unbelievable piece of tech. There is not enough room here so just a couple of high points. Seeing the deep diving vehicles; one tethered remote that operates on 4.8 kilovolt power at up to 16,000 feet depth and the second torpedo shaped submersible that is an autonomous programmed sonar searcher good for the same depth.
And the control room for them that makes Captain Kirk's bridge look like a penny arcade. It seems like no expense was spared outfitting the ship with high tech. Including the entire ship wired for good stereo for good music. We covered pretty much the entire ship. WOW!
We were able to meet the captain, the first mate and the chief engineer and talk at length. I asked at least a thousand questions and each was patiently answered in detail. An international crew of Canadian, Polish, Croation, Scottish, Filipino and of course, American.
We were treated to a delicious supper with the officers and crew.

My daughter took a bunch of video and when she has edited it and uploaded to YouTube I will share it here. I am simply amazed and overwhelmed with today's adventure.
