Well, I was home (ahem) "sick" today from work, and wife took off for a few hours so I had a chance to commandeer the living room. I took out the amp on probation and my new used Ibanez P bass and had a jam session with YouTube. Have a pretty good sound system with the TV so I was able to crank out the tunes and crank the little amp. I'm fairly impressed with the Ampeg but as said earlier it does fart out at higher levels, due to the speaker. I had bass/mid/treble on 12:00 and the P bass volume and bass full on.
For a little guy the Ampeg did a pretty good job and at times created a nice deep bass that I am fond of in my memories of my own Ampeg Glory Days. Some notes it was a little lighter but might have been the bass. I'll have to try again with one of my more workhorse basses. BTW A side note on the bass. I bought that bass on eBay last December for $79 plus $52 shipping to Alaska. When I received it, the bass was so nasty, it was covered with some sort of scum/dirt from head to toe. The strings were black and rusted, and there weren't volume/tone controls. I left it sitting in a corner for months until wife said either fix it up or give it to Salvation Army. Well, I took it apart one night while we were watching movies, and put it back together after basically sterilizing and de-filthing it. It looked really nice put back together! I bought a blank string nut and carved it down myself--it's a 41mm. Once put back together, it felt really nice and broken in. It has a deep throaty tone itself and I like the fact that I don't have to be gentle with it because it's already a bit scraped up. But I'm pretty confident I can perform with it--it has that good of a tone. So there you go-- a story within a story!
Anyway, jury's still out on the Ampeg. While I'm considering a GK MB108 over the Ampeg, it doesn't have those deep vintage sounding notes the Ampeg has, and that's what I'm wanting while using a P-style bass. I may end up really loving this little combination for living room practice/noodling.

I guess you could say I might have found a small at home practice system that sounds nice and thumpy similar to an old Ampeg and P bass!
