OK, GOF's I have to get this off my chest. I was reading an article yesterday that today it's been discovered that MEN are the cause of most of the gender problems in history.
So here's what they recommend.
If a guy opens a door for a woman it insinuates that the woman is weak.
If a guy is chivalrous and protects a woman he is sexist because he's insinuating a woman is weak.
Young women feel extra acts of kindness to the gentler sex is "patronizing."
It's the parent's fault for not teaching their sons to be more respectful of girls and sexism starts at a young age.
We were watching some old movies on TCM last weekend and it sure was a different world back then. Men complimented women on their looks, made passes and wolf whistles. Women were flattered and often flirted back. When there was a scuffle, women stepped back and let the guys duke it out. Women didn't mind being feminine and being as perceived so. They knew that doing anything getting dirty, or physical should be left to the guy. Guys looked nice and were gentlemen. Gals smelled pretty and dressed up for guys.
Sheesh. What an odd world we live in now. I love my wife Carey but I don't treat her any less than myself. Yet I am courteous to her, and if something physical needs to be done she looks at me with that look-- "isn't it already done?!" I am all for empowerment and equality, but I think the country has gone overboard. As a result it's been found that young men are starting to doubt their own identity because of all the focus being put on women. A lot of these insecure men go out and do bad things because they can't cope. Women have started using the platform to destroy men of all walks of life, and men get fired from their livelihood just by an accusation. And they don't even have to go to court and prove it! It's just on the accuser's word! It's a witch hunt.
I want to go into that movie Back to the Future, and stay back there (bringing Carey with me) or the Twilight Zone.

I'm with you, @alaskaleftybass. I respectfully hold the door for anybody! Most men and women say "Thank you" and I say "You're welcome" and it's over and forgotten. Kids usually don't say anything, and one butch looking woman kinda gave me a dirty look (maybe just the way she smiles?) and said nothing.
Sometimes others hold doors for me and the conversation is reversed. Most young people don't hold doors, though, they seem in too much of a hurry.
Never had to defend a woman. Seen two women fighting in Wal-Mart and called a woman employee to break it up.
Guess us white guys, or our ancestors, had it too easy in the past. Now we gotta pay the piper for that. But, then, I don't see young women being polite to each other like older women are. So, maybe it's a moratorium on manners and politeness all around!?
Yep, I'm a GOF, alright. At least the youth are nice to each other in church. Coincidence? I think not.
And it's not only white guys. I'm Alaska Native and our tradition was to be ultra-respectful of not only each other, but especially of the elders. Now the young people are losing their way and the results are heartbreaking. As a GOF I'm going to blame social media and those dang smartphones! It's like those phones are attached to the fingertips of all kids nowadays.
But yes, in church the kids are well-behaved. They were raised that way, had boundaries, and consequences for their actions. A community based faith where everyone held each other accountable to be nice.
great conversation GOF's .. I will always hold the door, pull out a chair, walk on the curb side of the street, etc. it's not only how I was raised but who I am.

You're so right about the smartphones. All my "kids" are in their 40s and won't answer a call, but a text gets an instant reply! Even face-to-face their eyes are on their phones! Otherwise, they are very respectful, like they were raised to be. And their kids are getting there, too
Although, I must say, that the group texts are a great way to share news and pix. Even sitting together in the stadium at my granddaughter's college graduation we were sharing photos and humorous comments about the speakers and hat decorations.
Con sarn those whippersnappers!!! Not MY kids or grandkids, but all those other welps. Well, except for my kids & grandkids' friends. And except for most of my family's kids & grandkids.. And except for my friends's kids & grandkids. And those at church. And the occasional random nice kid here and there. Ok, alright, maybe there IS some small hope for the future. It's just that one rude person seems to represent so many others. Or maybe I'm just grumpy.

Women demand that the toilet seat be lowered, especially in the middle of the night. How is holding a door open any different.
Holding a door open is a common courtesy. It shows politeness towards others. I’ve had ladies hold the door for me. I’ll never accept offering a gesture of civility as sexist.

This is a key part of civilized society IMO and living together in harmony. The fact that I recognize the presence of another human being and am willing to commit a random act of kindness, compassion, or respect is what keeps us in the mindset of seeing people as fellow human beings. FWIW , I believe laws may create a behavior that mimics respect, but genuine respect is in an entirely different animal. Genuine respect tends to deescalate conflict much faster than a laws, and it keeps one mindful that they are dealing with a fellow human being.
My background is weapon system design and the last thing I think about when doing my work is "people" on the receiving end. To me they are simply threats to be neutralized or aim points to be serviced...and I apologize to those who are offended. However, those of you a who are or have been asked to go in harm's way for your country probably get it. It's a friend or foe world out there, and this is one digital problem I have no difficulty addressing.
I grew up when respect and kindness to others was the glue that kept our society together. If someone is offended that I would hold a door for them or stop to help them pick-up papers they dropped on the floor, then they need to expect me to see them as less than a fellow human being. It's this very rejection of my simple acknowledgement of them as human beings that immediately leads to a much deeper feeling of a total lack of care for what happens to them at all.
Once again, I apologize to those who may find this a disturbing way of thinking. I treat everyone as I would like to be treated and when I see a simple act of humanity such as holding a door offending someone, they don't get a second chance to show me their true hostile colors. FWIW, a polite "thanks, but I've got it" goes a long way to making me feel like my act of kindness is recognized and appreciated, but that the person would rather have their space or not trouble me....and that's fine too.

Well, we hit 46 pages before the mod finally locked it!
Yeah, the tail makes 'em look ratlike, but they're more like a woodchuck crossed with a beaver. They're rodents, that's for sure. They have semi webbed feet, swim fast, go up to 65 lbs, make good eatin', and their pelts are used to make high zoot womens coats.
I'll remain in the Jeep while Jim wrestles the alligators.

It just ain’t hard to be nice...what we seem to have a hard time with is taking nice at face value, or even agreeing on what nice is. Even ~30 yrs ago before the species went collectively insane, I’d hold the door for a female (no way this person was a lady) at the University of Texas Permian Basin...she commenced to try and lecture me on the evils of my misogynistic evilness, so I let the damn door go knocking her for a loop in the 45-50 mph winds of the day.
