...sorry if I offend anyone, but someone is going to have talk very slowly and make one heck of an argument for me to understand how the "everyone gets a participation trophy" approach to teaching children prepares them for the world they are going to be living in. It's also probably worth noting that loosing and learning both start with the letter "L", and I suspect that's not a freak coincidence either.

OK, GOF's I have to get this off my chest. I was reading an article yesterday that today it's been discovered that MEN are the cause of most of the gender problems in history.

So here's what they recommend.
If a guy opens a door for a woman it insinuates that the woman is weak.
If a guy is chivalrous and protects a woman he is sexist because he's insinuating a woman is weak.
Young women feel extra acts of kindness to the gentler sex is "patronizing."
It's the parent's fault for not teaching their sons to be more respectful of girls and sexism starts at a young age.

We were watching some old movies on TCM last weekend and it sure was a different world back then. Men complimented women on their looks, made passes and wolf whistles. Women were flattered and often flirted back. When there was a scuffle, women stepped back and let the guys duke it out. Women didn't mind being feminine and being as perceived so. They knew that doing anything getting dirty, or physical should be left to the guy. Guys looked nice and were gentlemen. Gals smelled pretty and dressed up for guys.

Sheesh. What an odd world we live in now. I love my wife Carey but I don't treat her any less than myself. Yet I am courteous to her, and if something physical needs to be done she looks at me with that look-- "isn't it already done?!" I am all for empowerment and equality, but I think the country has gone overboard. As a result it's been found that young men are starting to doubt their own identity because of all the focus being put on women. A lot of these insecure men go out and do bad things because they can't cope. Women have started using the platform to destroy men of all walks of life, and men get fired from their livelihood just by an accusation. And they don't even have to go to court and prove it! It's just on the accuser's word! It's a witch hunt.

I want to go into that movie Back to the Future, and stay back there (bringing Carey with me) or the Twilight Zone.

Well, GOF's, to veer off subject here, I'd like to share my disappointing experience with some Ampeg gear I recently purchased.

I bought a beater Ibanez P bass clone a while back and just got it fixed up (all by myself) recently. I thought, OK, now I should get an Ampeg as I've always had warm glowing memories with my 70-80's experiences with P-bass Ampeg combinations. So I ordered a small practice amp, the BA108v2 and when I first got it I was in tone heaven. All that low thumpy bottom end Ampeg is known for. Sadly, it distorted the moment I turned it up even slightly. The speaker obviously overpowered by the amp. Then, the last day I could return the amp, all of a sudden it developed an electrical sounding hum. I know it wasn't my electrical because I have a five year old GK MB200 that I still use occasionally with headphones for practice. Well, between the distorting speaker and newly developed hum I decided I'm not going to deal with it. Sorry guys, I know you can pull out diagnostic equipment and figure out why the gear is doing something, but I'm not going to do that. If it fails within 30 days it's going back.

Well, while I was in tone honeymoon with Ampeg, I ordered a small Ampeg PF-350 head. Refurb. It arrived and although it had a great tone there was a low level hum. Both in the speaker and in the headphones. I had planned to use the small head for personal practice with headphones, an MP3 player, and my bass. But the hum was distracting, as I'm kind of OCD. So contacted the seller and the amp's going back to the post office tomorrow. It's really sad because both pieces of equipment were very well built and solid. The small practice combo was very professional looking.

So sad to say my brief encounter with Ampeg didn't have great results. I'm glad I own a couple GK MB's. They perform flawlessly and I always get a great tone out of them. It was a little fun for a while it lasted. Sadly, this doesn't feel like the same Ampeg I remember from the 70's-80's.

As for family trees, anyone ever wonder what the product prototypes looked like before they got to WD 40, Formula 409, Spray Nine, Dunlop Formula 65, etc.? Obviously the teams working on Spray Nine and WD 40 had perseverance, but you got to wonder how many pink slips were handed out in the R&D lab before they finally got to Formula 409.

When I want to go back in time, I simply listen to music from the past and get taken back to a time when music was important. The wayback machine that takes me there is a tube based ‘63 B-15N and Pbass. With that, I can go anywhere and to any time that I want.

That's absolutely gorgeous.

For what it's worth. The cables I was using for my new Ampeg PF-350 were bad. I took the amp out to my practice space and tried a different plug and cables and problem was gone. Causing shorts. With the brand new cable set MAN! That PF-350 sounds excellent now. I hooked up both my Eden speakers and talk about BOOTY. Sooooo. I'm keeping my new Ampeg. And the GK's.

The little Ampeg is going back for an exchange. I really loved the tone of that little beast but there was a problem with it. I bought it from Amazon and they're sending another one out to me and I should have it by Monday. I like a happy ending! My faith in Ampeg is restored. Not that it matters in the whole scope of the universe, but in my little corner of the world I'm making some pretty deep full notes now here in Sitka, Alaska. I knew there was no substitute for that Ampeg / P-bass tone. I'm going to have to invest in a real P-bass and start dropping hints on that to Carey oh, say around November when she asks what I want for Christmas.

It went through a head-to-toe restoration with some modifications that make it perform better than new. Good for at least another 55 years.

1) we should apologize now for a little extra courtesy to the opposite sex. Not ugliness in any way, but a little extra respect and courtesy.
