Dinner out at a great Italian restaurant today. Sunday birthday party.
What kind of computer work do you do?Speaking of which, there's been a big run of red sockeye here in Sitka. As most of the guys I work with fish, I trade them computer work on the side in exchange for deer meat and salmon. I place my order for steaks and fillets, and they give them to me sealed and frozen.
Everything's still attached (more or less). Last minute gig tonight (Saturday) requiring much hassle on my part. My son is taking my truck camping so I have to borrow my mother-in-law's suv to transport to and from the gig. BL is camping too so I have to schlep HIS gear too so he can leave right from to gig for his trip. *sigh* The things we so we can satisfy our artistic needs.
Up at 4:30AM Saturday ready to hit the road.
Bought my wife’s 2019 Chevy Equinox yesterday. New cars are light years ahead of our 15 year old car. The engine compartment is packed. Can barely get my hands into spaces, let alone a wrench. They must do it all from the bottom. Comes with synthetic oil which is a plus.
The transmission doesn’t come with a dipstick which is a first for me. The manual says that the fluid is not intended to be changed. Never changed or even needed to top up the transmission fluid in my previous vehicles so I guess I was ahead of my time on that one.
It’s going to take some time to figure out the computer and infortainment system. Have so far not been able to have it read a SSD drive with music on it.
Helm does not have the shop manuals available yet.
The one niggle is that when you stop, the engine turns off. I hate that. Seems that the government is requiring this environmental feature. Comming into the city we were stuck in rush hour traffic, the highway was a parking lot, getting to inch up for an hour. The engine shutting down drove me nuts. It is supposed to be adaptive and not turn off so often under certain conditions but I didn’t see that. From what I can tell, there isn’t a way to disable it or fine tune the delays. Even more motivation to move to the country. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the stars at night?

According to a friend, some Chevy vehicles have a work around where when stopped you select the L range on the shifter (which is actually a manual shift selection mode, not just low gear) and then use the buttons on the shifter to advance the transmission to its highest gear before taking off. At that point when you begin to drive you will have a fully automatic transmission (with perhaps some slightly different shift schedule points/logic??), but no start-stop feature kicking in.
Not sure if it will work on your model, but I'm told it does do the trick on many Chevy vehicles. If it were my vehicle I'd at least give it a try to see if it works and then check with the dealer to see if using it that way in heavy traffic would cause any issue with warranty. Given that all this stuff is computer controlled (including being protected from operator error/abuse to a large degree), I can't imagine this would present any type of problem.

Story time: I flew to Seattle in March to pick up a bass I bought and rented a car. they gave me a new Lincoln with every computer driven gadget in the world....It took me 10 minutes to figure how to start the car and then get in drive, I finally got the gps working and after a while the fm radio.....the rear windshield wiper was going and I never figured that out it went for 2 days....I couldn't get the gas cap open and it took 20 minutes to turn on the headlights. I was scared everytime I drove it.....I finally got my bass the next day and made it back to the airport.....I was so glad when I got to my seat and put the bass in its seat, I could finally relax......when I got back to Atlanta I was to glad to see my 2000 Nissan Frontier with no crap on it....next time its rent a wreck for me!!
Woke up with a pulse again! Not counted fingers and toes yet. Still getting coffee'd up.
I'm up and about, may awaken any minute now. All extremities in place-though not necessarily working.

Heh. The last time my wife and I went to Maui we rented some GM SUV with an ONSTAR system. I managed to call in inadvertently while dweebing with various controls, and hilarity ensued as we tried to back down the Homeland Security/Life Flight/Fish Taco and Margarita Poisoning Red Alert.

Friend of mine kindof "inherited" a toothless pony. It was thought to be 35-ish but investigation showed more like 50-ish
. Seems it's common hereabout to "shave" the age when selling an equine

Back to gardening now, while we have nice weather. If I can get a couple hours in today and tomorrow, I might just get caught up enough that I won't be falling behind for a week or two...
The big one is wilting, probably a goner... smaller ones are doing better. I'm going to cut back the big one quite a bit so the roots have less to support. I put some root stimulating fertilizer in and may have overdone it. This ones just a warm up run. I have some better plants to work with. So sink or swim you little Bansai wannabe!

Last year I bought a new Impreza for wife Carey. She drove it one day and gave it to me. It turned out to be a good deal for me because she really is not tech friendly. She has CD's in the car and prefers the AM to pop on when she starts the car. I on the other hand like the new features of the Impreza. It interfaces with my iPhone and I use it to play my Amazon Prime albums. It downloaded my iPhone address book so when someone calls it announces who's calling. The steering wheel has volume controls, play stop, answer/hang up. And the back up camera is nice.
By Chevy/GM standards my Subaru is actually modest in technology. But it does JUST enough for me. Last winter we had a terrible frozen season and that little "girl" crawled over every snow/ice bank like a caterpillar. She's gained my respect for reliability and it's well chosen features.
@Stumbo I work for the City and Borough of Sitka as PC Support/Webmaster. I have about 150 computers, 50 Apple devices, and the website that keeps me busy. I have 7 different locations that are all connected via a metrolan. Right now it's new FY19 and I have new electronic toys coming in every day, everyone has new equipment requests and I procure, then deploy them. It's a fun job and i work with a youngish smart, attractive staff.

The largest, sickly tree is now half as tall and only has 4 leaves. That's gunna piss it off. Hopefully it will be motivational for it. In for a break. I pulled up some 3 ft tall lilac shoots (one 30 ft from the big lilac) to transplant. Ripped the roots off on one, then I noticed the gnarly trunk and it's now in a torture chamber. I cut that one in half right off the bat. Just not enough root. Especially since it was used to being fed by a 30 ft root
I'm going to go catch some bugs and pull their legs off now.

I used to be MORE youngish and wife thinks I'm cute so that must count for something??

Thanks, I’ll check out L. I shouldn’t have to play with the gears, just put it in drive when the light changes.
What worked today is shifting into neutral. I also found that it I stop and slightly lift the pressure off the brake pedal after stopping it wouldn’t shut down. Most of the time it worked but not always. I’ll have to experiment with that though.
When we arrived at the dealer we had a two hour wait. I joked that I wanted to take the yellow corvette out that they had in the showroom. Instead, they gave us a beautiful Camero convertible to take for a spin and said that lunch would be on them. Boy that car can move.
Same type of story. I got in the car and couldn’t figure how to adjust the back and forth of the seat. On my model there are three leavers, this one only had two. I couldn’t find the third one. I had to call someone over. The solution was easy, one of the leavers was dual purpose, it controlled up and down and back and forth. I felt like an idiot.
