In my opinion "band" is a sum of it's parts. It takes more than one and u all have to/should work together to produce your product. Sooooooo many folks don't understand that.

This is also why I've only purchased live concert DVD's
I want to hear the band in a live setting with the energy that only a live band in front of an audience can deliver.
Today with audio and video and HD broadband capabilities, I think people expect more than just the music.
They want to see the band too or music videos would not be so popular.
A few smart studios are merging with venue owners & film crews to create recording clubs, like Austin City Limits, Troubadour, Artist Den etc.
As the song goes. Video Killed The Radio Star.
I want to hear the band in a live setting with the energy that only a live band in front of an audience can deliver.

Right you are...my favorite artist's den so far is Robert Plant and his band ---simply awesome!!!!!
I know what you mean. Most everything today is so heavily compressed that you can't distinguish the individual instruments. It just sounds like a wall of noise with vocals on top. Yikes!!
My suggestions have actually helped some serious studios and producers to re-think their processes.
I keep trying to tell them to not Over-Think Rock & Roll
Just recently helped an engineer in Sweden recording old school jazz with the whole idea of capturing the band, not just recording tracks.
Also studios tend to concentrate so much on the capture side, that they tend to forget about getting the sound source right.
They'll spend crazy money on mics and outboard gear trying to record a $400.00 POS novice quality amp.
There are also much better speakers out there than V-30's
An engineer in Spain had the right amps, but was using totally wrong speakers and cabs to capture an old school 50's and 60's sound.
Using a variety of open back cabs for guitars,
15's, AlNiCo 10"s & 12"s just simply never occurred to him.

Digital editing is handy, but if the sound is too clean, too clinical, it can choke the very life out of the performance.

Hello, you glorious old bastards! Number 95, here. I've had a good 'mator crop! I have to recommend the Cherokee Purple's for flavor; plant lots as not too productive (first time trying them, so…). I hear many of you old men complaining of heat. What you call hell… I call home! Absolutely Rain Forest type conditions here in Acadiana for the last 2 weeks. I'm fearful that since it was a late Spring that I may endure the retched conditions of 100+ heat index for several more weeks. At least football is about to start.

^ Uggh. I'm wilting just reading your post. We had that kind of stuff in the D.C. area a couple years ago. 30+days of over 90 , high humidity and heat index over 100. I feel your pain but I'm NOT coming down for a visit.
oct-april is really the only sane time to be here… okay, into the second week of jazz fest (1st weekend of May) but then both weeks are not sane.
