My first thought was why not just fill it in. Reading further I realized its not that simple, I guess. I had not considered the need to drain. Hope the "entity" remains reasonable for you. Around here, the inspections are largely "drive by", as long as the county gets paid.
This weekend? ....hard for me to get use to the concept of that. Those are the days the wife is home during the day, right? After 40 years of field service, on call, and beating my body down, since June 23, COPD has taken me out of work now that they tell me I have to be on oxygen when "up and about". Trying to remain positive and productive but it's difficult finding the energy when I get short of breath on some of the simplest tasks, regardless of whether I'm connected to the hose or not. Don't know where I'd be if the Shuttles hadn't come along a few years ago.
I owe much gratitude to guys like Andy for developing lighter weight rigs, now that it's really a necessity for me.

Yeah, removing a pool is nowhere near as simple as it might appear.

Up here in the Ga mtns we would grill some steaks and invite the neighbors over for target practice everyone has shotguns and ar15s.....it would be rubble in a few hours, no laws against it....

IME this can be said of most any job that seems to cross my path these days...so I get what you're saying!
The problem with getting rid of pools is that you are removing the results of a previous easy removal effort that was then back-filled with much more robust materials. Assuming the pool still retains its watertight integrity, you are in a relatively flat/dry area, it's rectangular, and there is already a shallow end to deep end slope, you might have a decent starting point for a low profile garage that could double as a bomb shelter. Just a thought...and admittedly not a good one.

Actually, re-using the structure subterranean did cross my mind... enough that I went down and took measurements!

I like the idea of repurposing but as I get older the thought of slipping down that slope -- whew-- it would land me in the hospital. But it sure would make a great additional room. Good luck, let us know how it turns out...

For starters , present and accounted for. Wow , been a busy couple of weeks for me. An old drummer friend called me a couple of weeks ago and asked me if I wanted to do a sub gig next Friday night. Knowing that he had been in Classic rock bands with me , I said sure , get me a set list. Come to find out that the gig is with his current blues band. Got about 25 songs that I have to learn including about 15 that I've never even heard of. You Tube and I have had a real close relationship for the last couple of weeks. Think I'll be OK but it sure has been interesting.
Found out Gatorbait (my son) and his girlfriend are moving from Cali. to Colorado. His girl came into a bit of a windfall and bought tickets to come visit us for a few days. Seahag is ecstatic. She really misses him and they are all at the renaissance festival as I am typing this. Unfortunately they leave Monday and from past experience , I know the wifey is gonna be miserable for a few days over that.
I picked up a PF 500 a while back and have been loving it. Eleven pounds as opposed to the eighty-five of the old SVT has been a lot nicer to my back. Still have the SVT but it hasn't been out in a while. My back has recently convinced me to look into an Ampeg 2 12 to replace the trusty old 8 10e. It's currently out of stock but I'm on the e-mail list to be notified when it comes in and I'm going to pull the trigger when it does.
Glad the local entities have been decent with Agedhorse and his pool. I work construction around the Baltimore Washington corridor in Maryland in several different counties and know for a fact that some of them can be a real pain to work in due to the "enthusiasm" of some of those entities. And yeah , what ALB said about it being primarily a revenue generator is true. A couple of the ones I deal with give bonuses partially based on revenue generated from re-inspection fees so some of these guys really go out of their way to fail inspections. Some of those re-inspection fees are quite substantial. Hope you're not in one of these areas.
