It's getting chilly in Sitka. There's a crispness in the morning air that hints at a very cool winter. We have the Japanese current flowing through the area so we never get real cold winters but rumor is that we will this year. It was too hot this summer and everyone talked about how 30 years ago it was unheard of in Sitka to have an air conditioner. Now almost everyone has one. The nightmare of it all is that I don't see it cooling down in the future for our summers.

The world's climate is definitely changing and the Navy has been (for a long time) looking at how it will impact national security operations, global politics, and in particular Naval installations around the world which are, as one might imagine, pretty much at sea level and right on a shoreline of a large body of water. :)

The sky is blue this morning but it was the coldest day this fall. We were freezing with light jackets. It'll be comfortable this afternoon but the nights are close to freezing. They are well into harvesting the apples in the country where it is colder, much earlier this year. They usually wait untill temperatures dip below the freezing point which typically isn't till October.

With all those air conditioners, there's a higher demand for power. I've read about harvesting ocean currents and wave energy for hydo-electric applications. There's tremendous energy potential waiting to be tapped on a large scale. Maybe the next big thing.

you know I've been to Sitka before about 5 years ago.. what a beautiful place......also at the Mendenhall glacier...where you can actually see 12000 years of ice recession.....its definitely getting warmer. so here is a trick question for all of the smart guys here......how much will the oceans rise if all of the ice at the north pole melts????

While this seems intriguing and a logical upscale extension of hydroelectric power plant concepts, I wonder what the impacts will be for the earth once we reach a point where the energy we extract upsets some dynamic environmental balance we've yet to completely understand. Used only in smaller city applications as a supplemental source of power (during peak demand periods) I would guess (with no facts to back me up) that such a system would only be minimally disruptive to the local underwater environment.

We've been a hydro only city for decades. We only use diesel when there's a problem with the hydro system, which has happened. We have staff in the electric department who report environmental impacts to science groups, the state, and feds.

I suspect that long before we reach an environmental imbalance that the earch can’t continue cope with, they will develop alternate sources of energy that we haven’t even remotely conceived of.

I like the concept of beaming energy collected in space down to earth.

Global warming is well established. At the same time there are researchers whose empires survive on grants for studying global warming. I think that one has to take some pronouncements (aka findings) with a grain of salt on both sides of the issue. For example, the fossil fuel industry has resisted electrically powered vehicles. When there is money to be made, large companies are going to vehemently resist.

As an aside, I was once involved in a research project that studied whether or not the radiation from power lines caused health issues. Not surprisingly, power companies funded their own “indepedent“ research on the subject to bolster their position that it’s safe. They also got their people involved in reviewing grant applications made to government agencies. Kind of a rigged system. The governments and UN current position is that there are no KNOWN issues but further research is needed.

They claim that drinking water contaminated with excreted drugs is a growing problem. Neuro-active compounds such as antidepressants, not to mention antibiotics, blood thinners, etc. are in the water. Pharma makes way too much money to stop what they are doing.

Like the power lines, they are studying the problem of water contamination. Unfortunalely, global issues are fraught with many obstacles.

In keeping with alternate forms of energy, I am thinking that consuming copious amounts of "beans-on-toast" might do the trick as well. Just sayin' :whistle:
