I’ve been doing veterinary software support for the last 8 years, and get dragged into a lot of hardware issues even though IT isn’t my primary function.

I’ve noticed that routers are the most common item, when it comes to premature hardware failure.

I’ve wondered if it’s because they are the first point of connection to the ISP. Leaves them prone to voltage spikes on cable company facilities, as well as the AC power line?

Getting "can't load website took to long to respond" message from my router. Wireless: 2 Windows phones, 1 Android tablet, 1 Surface and my hardwired pc

Started today after I moved electric cables for router and cable modem

Going to exchange router tomorrow.

Any of you Hardware guys know about this? I looked up a few things but nothing that really helped.

What kind of router, Stumbo? I only use Cisco/Linksys. It is odd that the failure occurred after you moved power cables. I believe you have a router from the Internet Provider? Or I guess it would be called a modem. Hook up one computer by network cable directly to the modem from your provider and see how fast pages load. If the pages are still loading slow, then the problem is with the company modem. If not, you're correct, it is the router.

I have a direct connect PC...it doesn't load either....exchanging router today.

Can you tell us the brand and model of the router, as well as what the lights do on the front? Either the old/dead router or the replacement if you already did or decide to just replace it and need help with that.

Replacement's probably the easiest thing to do if you can't reach it at all. Starting fresh is as easy as troubleshooting and it might be dead.

If working on the old, are the computers connecting to it? Varies with your devices, but all should have an icon that indicates a connection or not somewhere on the display. That indication and the lights on the router usually tell the story.

If you want to try something with the old router you need the password you set on it, or if you didn't set one, it's in the manual (really important to set your own complex password on these and write it down). The inside facing IP address, the one you use to reach the router is needed as well, but that can be discovered. If you have the password but not the IP, assuming the wired PC is windows, use that and download [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] which you can install or just run it uninstalled (it will offer both options). Just type in 192.168.1.0/24 and hit the green button. If nothing is found, try 192.168.0.0/24 and repeat. If you can't get that program onto the computer, the IP address is almost always 192.168.1.1 and you can just type that into the web browser, then if nothing, try 192.168.0.1

If you don't have the password, we have to set it back to factory default, then you might as well go new. As was mentioned, the ISP provided modems, or cheap modems are not very reliable. Newer ones work well. Cisco/linksys are pretty solid, but set you back for about $100, and a provider will always give you the $30 variety.

Always start working from the wired computer first. It's easiest. Wireless is much more voodoo. You do want to setup the security on wireless.

I'm back. Exchanged router...hardwired PC is fine. Also, new ethernet cable and power supply.:thumbsup:

I've found some computers and other devices can be picky about which security protocol is used.
...you're obviously luckier than me, because I've never found one that wasn't picky about something that I didn't seem to know how to figure out on my own! On the other hand, you actually know what you're doing with this stuff. :)

One day while chatting with Jon he told me of his projects. I was a bit dizzy after listening to his expertise. :wacky:
 
Routers tend to sit there working 24/7, then one day they stop. Technology advances, encription gets better. Firmware updates are often not applied. It never hurts to update them with the latest model from time to time.

My router is a more complicated box, it has the fiber optic in and handles phone, internet, and tv. The phone company owns and maintains it. Last time it went down, the service tech took one look at it and said that they just replace them with a different model when they develop issues. They know that certain products need to be replaced. It’s less expensive to do it as needed rather than a recall.

I find that as they sit gathering dust inside, it can affect the operation. Simply moving the box might have caused something to fail/short.

Well, I get a bit dizzy doing the same type of work you do... just a different skill set, different training and experience. I expect you could learn and do the same.

It should be noted the poor reliability factor does not apply to higher end consumer grade rated or any decent commercial grade.

As far as the complexity of a fiber router, it's really not doing anything any other router does, converts one network protocol to another (fiber, DSL, cable etc, to Ethernet and wireless for your internal network). The TV and phone is just the same regular TCP/IP protocols of any internet/ethernet based network. It is a lot faster than non-fiber though, until it hits a bottleneck in your home, like wireless. The speed is still a big advantage though, so you can watch TV and have a few devices streaming video, downloading or whatever, without any impact on others.

I have 4 or 5 of the linksys or cisco/linksys routers in my house, all over ten years old. I still use the crappy ISP provided junk on the incoming though. Mainly because the older routers are not DSL. I buy my own cheap DSL router when theirs fails and have them ship a replacement, then I'm ready for the next cheap router fail.

Are you on Cable, DSP or fiber?

I'm with you on the Cisco/Linksys choice bro bad. I "grew up" with them when routers started growing in popularity. It seems for years coming right out of the box Cisco/Linksys fires up the same with the same starter password and interface that I've grown used to using. I don't use any of the wizards or CD's, I set all my parameters in the Linksys interface webpage. Our provider is a true Alaskan born company called GCI and they provide phone, internet, and cable. Our cable boxes are separate from the phone box and internet box. And yes, their modems seem to be pretty cheap. Mine has reset a few times in the last couple months.

I've also had good results with Cisco/Linksys routers, as well as Motorola cable modems. I buy my own stuff rather than taking what Comcast provides. I'd use a different provider if there was a practical alternative, but choice are limited where I live.
@ric426 I didn't know I could provide my own cable modem. I like Motorola stuff, it's pretty bullet proof. To sound a bit dumb, how does the provider "find" your cable modem on their servers? I also looked at Motorola cable modems on Amazon and they even have some with wi-fi and six LAN ports. Sounds like a good solution.

All I had to do was call Comcast customer support once it was hooked up, and read them the MAC address that's on the label. They sent out a test signal, the modem replied and away we went. Considering their monthly charge to use one of their modems, this one paid for itself in about 9 months and has been running for at least 7 years.
 
Scuse me...what's a router? ;) Where I live, there is no cable, no dsl, no fiber. Our phones, tablets, and desktops run through a Verizon 4G cell tower (usb modems for the desktops) that's six miles away and the tv comes off an antenna in the attic. We figure anything over 10 mbs is broadband. :thumbsup:

How's that for GOFism?
