Yeah, I read that after I posted the comment. It was reassuring. Frankly, I'm surprised because I remember when we filled a metal cap with about an ounce of MEK, then fed about 2 cubic feet of Styrofoam into it before it stopped instantly dissolving.

Wife Carey has a 2010 Subaru Forester. Before that we had a 2003 Toyota Corolla we bought nearly brand new. Both cars only needed oil changes. Now I have a Subaru Impreza. Owned it for two years and it only needs oil changes. Seems like the Japanese cars are striving for dependability again. But then Subaru has always made good cars. When we got married we bought used Subarus and actually passed three on to the kids. Of course they ran them into the ground.... grrr....

If I won the lottery I'd like either a Land Rover or Jaguar SUV in deep ruby red. But I gotta win the lottery first...

For the lottery win gonna say (here in what we call 2019 for some reason) the 2020 Audi S4 Avant. The older V8 S4 Avant is a bank account waiting to be emptied. However ... given my preference for mini-rigs o' doom an Audi TTS is big enough for amps, cabs, gear bag and bass. Amazing.

Actually (speaking of Fiat) the Fiat Abarth 500 is wicked cool. It will fit my bass and rig!

Happy Saturday, GOF's! I've been kicking around the idea of trying out a new lefty ibanez called the SR505. Last year I lucked into buying an SR1200EL with a 5pc Jatoba/Walnut neck and it played like butter. Stupidly, I returned it to Guitar Center, who had mispriced it at a drastically reduced price. Now the SR1200's are really hard to find.

So, I do own the mahogany SR500. I tried a couple five strings but they felt so odd to me-- the neck felt like a baseball bat. And it seems odd to me to have the lowest string a B instead of E. How many of you play a five string and find it a valuable addition to your collection? Here's the bass:

I haven't found a need in the music I play for a five string bass and never tried one, so as usual I'm not going to be any help Will. :)

From all I have read and from folks I have spoken with I don't believe that a five string bass is necessarily an improvement on the standard bass guitar so much as it is a different (albeit similar) instrument. I know there are songs where the (signature) bass line was written for a five string, but those just don't show up in my work. FWIW, I too find that extra neck width very odd feeling.

Don't say you returned the SR1200EL because you felt guilty due to it being priced too low. :woot:

You'll get used to the B string; if you've never played a 5 string bass, it does take some time to get used to it without hitting the wrong strings while playing (always a treat on the gig!) :D, not that I've ever done such. ;) :laugh: If nothing else, for now look at the B string as a very long finger rest.

There’s an SR500 that just came in to my local GC in palm desert. It looks like someone played it for a couple years wearing a chain mail glove, or maybe Edward scissorhands was previous owner. It’s not available for another few weeks but it’s marked at $249 and will probably walk for $220. Sounds fat and plays really well. I was very surprised - the bart mk1’s in it aren’t bad. It’s on radar. Makes me wonder how the 506 sounds, easy find under $400. (Bad GAS attacks lately. Am pro jazz 4 and a berg cn212, with a B|amp coming in hot)

I’ve been loving on 5’ers since ‘93 or so starting with a pair of stingray 5’s I got to cover the songs we were writing at the time, loved the low B out the gate. Now 4 string necks feel tiny. I have big mitts for a 5’10” guy, ymmv. So yeah, I like 5’ers. My ‘98 thumb 5 is really close spaced though so it’s a different animal. I want a dingwall 6’er next actually.

I’m 52 and grumpy is me on a good day. Does that make me a non-card carrying GOF?

@BassCliff plays a 6 string, maybe he'll stop by.

I had a 2002 Fender MIM Jazz that I picked up NOS in about 2010. I practiced on it quite a bit. Yeah, the neck is pretty wide and thick but I was getting used to it.

Problem was that it was pretty much useless in my classic rock jam band so I pretty much dropped working on it.

Having the low B was cool but it didn't really lend itself to what I was doing. It was also passive and I liked the capabilities of my active 3 band eq Ibanez Musician 4 string.

I sold the fiver a couple of years ago.

I don't know if that helps any. That's all I got.
