Need your help: Think of retiring.

Your post in that thread made me think maybe I need to pop in here. I'm 60, on partial retirement from my University job, thinking about taking Social Security when I am eligible at 62.

Right now I work for myself as a petsitter and my hours are part-time and sporadic, but work gets in the way of many things I would prefer to be doing, like playing my bass.

I shoulda worked about 1 more year but things were changing at the company and my position was about to be eliminated. Don't bet on being able to find part time work. It seems most places want people they can mold to their image. Experience doesn't seem to count for a whole helluva lot.

A V4 can be a thing of wonder as you experienced.

They can require a LOT of work to get it operating optimally. I think it's because these amps run so hot but contaminants also have a way of getting into everything.

It helps to decouple the problem to ensure that the issue is within the pre-amp. Connect an instrument cable to the EXT AMP jack (preamp out) and connect it to an external power amp. If this isn't possible, plug into the input of another amp. Since in the latter case you are caining to pre-amps together, you have to watch the gain level of the V4's preamp as it isn't difficult to overdrive the input of the second pre-amp. If you determine that the problem is in the pre-amp....

Interesting. Because I only play bass, not guitar, I had no idea there was a V4 and a V4B. Learn sumpin' all the time.

The amp is all right, it's just voiced for guitar. It's the V4, not the V4B.

To convert to a V4B, the capacitor changes are minor and fully reversible should you ever want to restore it to original conditional. Many just use V4's as is with bass.

Can't say that I find the distortion circuit useful, that stays switched off.

At some point in life, I find that you have to prioritize what you want to accomplish with what time you have left. One thing for sure, that time is precious.

High resolution is nice but 1080P is pretty good for my needs.

I'm thinking about a big apple screen for my laptop for use with Logic Pro X, PCB design, and test equipment displays. This is more about a large screen workspace than the need for better resolution. I have an AppleTV thingy that I got for free but have not used it.

I've never played games other than pong and solitare. I imagine that 4K must be used by gamers.

The other thing about fancy displays, many supplement the sound systems with outboard amps and speakers, 5.1, at least a center speaker. I don't think that I'd want a curved screen, another technology that keeps on evolving. I'd want a display that people can watch from different angles.

I agree with you on 1080P being good enough. I don't believe that you are limited to a "big apple screen" for what you want. I connect my laptop to a 24" Vizio and a 40" Vizio Smart TV (1080). The work space is great...I hate going back to a 15.4 display!

Fancy displays are good for a lot of things, except sound. With the main interest in design, these displays have small, tinny sounding speakers that are bottom or back firing. I have a 5.1 sound system for one TV and a 2.1 for the other...sound is great now.
