I bought my first Fender back in college, because a teacher told me that I wouldn't get gigs with my short-scale bass.I didn’t realize that people expressed animosity towards short scale basses. I have two and nobody has ever knocked me for it.
I did get in trouble a few times in the late '70's, for showboating while playing fancy coffee-table basses. But that was my fault, not the instruments.
I've had everything from an 18" silicone-stringed DeArmond to a 42" EUB since then, and never had anybody diss me for my choice of instrument. I currently have a 25" mini ABG and a 34 to 37" fanned-fret Dingwall, and they both get gigged regularly.
The only place eyebrows ever seem to get raised about my gear, is on Talkbass.
