Love you like chicken!

Oh yeah, in the South if you order iced tea it's gonna be sweet.

... nearly forgot ... a Rick bass playing friend born and raised in Louisiana just absolutely hates butter beans. Hates, hates, hates. And this is what he says they give him when he's doing time for a (oops) DUI. The butter beans makes what's bad even worser, he says.

Creamed chipped beef on toast
is probably all I need to say here
except
take notice of when you begin to look forward to it

And in all truth, I don't bake.

Of course the universe needs to prove me wrong. Set and setting is 23 days in rehab, and Becky directs me after exercise to the kitchen. We am baking a caek today. It's from a box and it's going to be a sponge cake. And do not know until reading the directions on the box that a sponge cake is made with vegetable oil. Do not know this on account of I don't bake.

Friend of mine, who by chance shares my birthday day and year, has an arrangement in her home. You want dessert, go out and buy it. She is most forthright in declaring her lines.

And perfectly good with this, myself, but today Becky is directing me to bake a caek. We go back to some exciting exercise as it bakes, and then! Frosting!

Seriously, do not read the ingredients list on canned caek frosting.

Now it's caek for eveyone in physical therapy and I take the opportunity to politely decline.

However there is something new down where I buy my healthy coffee bean juice. Two shots of espresso served over a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream. :: faint ::

I'm a sho' nuff Southern Yankee (with very good cholesterol, happily enough).

High fibre good, high fat, not so good.

I wound up with beans-on-toast because all the good TalkBass usernames were taken. Kind of like internet web addresses these days. So I went with a Beatles reference.

Beans on toast was indeed a staple on Merseyside! Tomato Gravy is another. Open a large can of Tomatoes and put them in a pan. Stir in a nice amount of Bisto and stir. goes very well with Sausage and Mash - yet another Merseyside staple. :D

Since I've lived almost my entire life below the Mason Dixon line , technically , I'm southern. Since most of that time has been in Maryland , most "Real Southerners" wouldn't agree. All that being said , I came up with 26 and maybe 27 (not sure if I have ever had Brunswick Stew.) Of those 26 , there's only two that I would currently rule out trying again. Didn't care for chitterlings (southern spelling chitlins) and I definitely don't care for boiled peanuts so that leaves me with 24 that I would repeat. Oh , and BTW , we're going on vacation next week and S.O.S will be my main stay for breakfast , unless we find another place that makes a good Eggs Benedict. The last one closed down a couple of years ago. Either way , top it off with one or two Bloody Marys and it's guaranteed to get your day rollin'.

I was born and raised in Maryland, technically the South but not culturally so much. The farther south you go, the more weird southern food you encounter.

Yeah, I gave myself a point for grits because it really needs to be on there by itself. Shrimp and grits is, as far as I know, a Louisiana thing, which is in the south, yes, but it's very regional (or it seemed so when I lived back east), whereas you'll start finding grits on the menu just north of Richmond. Not a fan of okra, but I don't mind it fried so much. I also love greens, especially with vinegar! We used to put vinegar on spinach all the time and the neighbor kids were like, ew, why would you do that?
Yeah! Vinegar(w/ or w/o peppers)on greens.

I'm guessing that would have been Navy boot camp? In '67 when I went through Marine boot, there was no option on what or how much you took and ate. But my understanding is that the gap between MCRD San Diego and NTC San Diego was quite a bit wider than the boat channel.
Yeah, Navy. Great Lakes. We were still in civvies(got in late previous evening). We could have as much food as we wanted-just never had enuff time to eat.

Today, June 18th, is Paul McCartney’s 77th birthday. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He lead more than a few of us astray.

I spent my childhood in southern California, and the rest in central Virginia. I can get along with the cuisine in either. I've visited my daughter on the southern coast of France. All this talk of fancy French food is wasted on me. I couldn't find a taco to save my life..... damn near starved to death. I miss my daughter, yes, but damn.... a guy's gotta eat.

Yeah, like the crazy uncle that's kept locked in the basement part the family tree. I didn't find anything I could really get my palette around until I got to Normandy. That is, unless you're talking pastries. Whole different world there as far as I'm concerned. Maybe that's why Marie Antoinette said "Let them eat cake"... I could have done that, tacos be damned.
I tried the crepes... not fond of buckwheat. That creme brule(is that how you spell that) looks absolutely divine though.

(snicker)

All recruits in those days hit MCRD late in the evening. Immediately thereafter...

1.stand in formation on yellow footprints
2. Receive reading of relevant articles of UCMJ..UA, desertion, insubordination
3. Heads shaved
4. Shower
5. Box up all civies, receive issue of utilities and sneakers
6. March to platoon area
7. Receive bed linens etc
8. Make racks, try to pass inspection...repeatedly
9. Try to sleep

All of this while being threatened and pursued by semi-Neanderthal drill instructors who are devoutly hoping for an excuse to kill and eat a recruit. Somewhere around step 3 I knew I had made a terrible mistake, and that it was exactly too late to do anything about it.

Food? I really have no idea. I imagine we were fed something, and I assume it was nutritious...I gained 35 pounds.

Been listening to the SiriusXM Beatles Channel celebrate Sir Paul's Birthday (I would like you to dance) for the past several days. His daughter, Mary (who is also a mother but, never comes to me) shared her favorite Wings songs and memories and exhorted us all to light a candle for her dad. So, Mrs. Dog did!

My last year I was stationed in Charleston, SC. I had an old "friend" who was permanent party(non-boot)at P.I. I drove down there so he and I could go do some serious drinking in Savannah. Watched a D.I. plant a size 11(?) boot up some poor recruit's keester when he didn't move quick enough. IDK if they can still do that but in 67/8 it seemed to be 'normal'.
