GHS Balanced Nickel strings

I only played the Pure Blues (45-65-80-100) once on a borrowed Fender MIM Jazz. I also tried the DR Sunbeams (45-105) on my J once.

The round core strings by DR are noticeably looser-feeling than the GHS round cores, including the RC Boomers and these BNs.
Tone-wise, I do remember the Pure Blues to be mellower than the Sunbeams right out of the package, so there may be some similarities to the BNs there, though the PBs are a special nickel alloy ("Quantum Nickel") while the BNs are pure nickel.
I also remember both DR's to be nice and smooth texture-wise just like the BNs.
Thanks - that gives me some frame of reference. I'll be trying BN's on a G&L L-1000 for blues gigs - soon.

I've read a few posts in the past concerning "pure nickel" having a lower output than "nickel-plated steel". For example, Fender 7150 vs. 7250.

What has been your experience so far with these new Balanced Nickels vs. Round Core Boomers in terms of overall output?

I'm here to answer another one of my own questions from an earlier post. Output level and responsiveness: Pure nickel vs. Nickel-plated-steel.

No perceivable difference between the BNs and the RC Boomers in my experience.

Best wishes to @michael_t today! Good luck with your surgery.

Thanks, @Linnin ! I'm happy to report to you everything went very well.

Our short scale strings have a 37.25" winding length, outside of ball end to the silk. Anyone with a Mustang bass can take a measurement of a string currently on the bass to see if they'll work. I don't have a Mustang in the office, or I'd do it.

As a point of clarification, I worked with Scott Whitley, who was the originator of the SWB-1 (before Chowny took production) and head of Link Removed. We got to talking, and I asked if there was anything we could do to edit our short scale strings, and that's where the talk about the winding length started from.

The original SWB-1 did not have a thru-body bridge, so there's a good chance that the short scale Balanced Nickels will only work with the top-load option on the current Chowny SWB-1.
Jon, just a little update-the LaBella FL-MUS I have on at the minute are especially made for Mustang basses and have a 33.25” winding from ball end to silk. This will mean that GHS short scale strings will fit many basses with a string-thru body, including the Chowny SWB-1, right? If so, I think that’s good news for a lot of users, and I’ll definitly be purchasing a set of those nickels :D

Looks like there was a typo by @Jon Moody in his earlier post...

Short scale = 32.75"
Universal long scale = 37.25"

At @michael_t pointed out, I had a typo (that I just edited on the original post). So no, they won’t for a Mustang. They will NOT fit the thru-body option of the Chowny SWB-1, but will fit the top-load option on the bass.

I finally got around to trying these on my GZR equipped Nate Mendel P. I had the BNs on my PJ Fender but wasn't digging it. The strings sound fantastic on the Nate Mendel.

I think they sound great on my Precision bass; probably wouldn’t be my first pick on my Jazz bass — though I haven’t tried it. Finding the set that best matches your particular instrument is important!

^^^Agreed^^^ I'm keeping my second set of Balanced Nickels for my Fender American Professional Precision. Round Core Bass Boomers are perfect on my Fender American Standard Jazz, so I am just going to stay with them.

Sounds like a good plan.

I knew from the beginning the BNs would be for my P bass.
As for my J, as much as I've been enjoying the RC Boomers that are on it now, I think I'm going back to the tried and true PWs when it's time for the change.
