Gibson Apparently In Trouble.

Invalid Link Removed

Thread hijack ahead: I clicked your link to GS; pretty impressive results list, but I wonder how many of those articles you actually accessed as far as the full text. From the source information I can see that many of them are provided via commercial subscription databases which require special access -- which many people do not have. Just one of many false hopes held out by Google. What you get is actually less than what you expect.

Yeah more to demonstrate the breadth of writing and research on te topic. There are plenty of articles in mainstream press about it as well. It is a pretty interesting topic to me.

Not criticizing your research interests or methods, just trying to make folks aware that for academic journal articles there usually are subscription firewalls in place that Google cannot penetrate. Which means, if you have the time and are serious enough about the topic and are near an academic or decent-sized public library, try the library
first.

That is more than fair.

I just respectfully asked a guy to back up a claim, and he decided a personal turd-sling would be more appropriate... :)

How about you start a separate topic for this if you think it worthwhile to continue?

As I was saying, I believe Henry demonstrates the classic signs of someone with NPD.

Regardless, looks like Gibson has a serious problem. Doubtful they will go under any time soon but their bottom line will surely suffer.

I go to a lot of guitar shows because I like guitars and basses and I have been going to them since before ebay... yeah, really. In the last 10 years I have seen countless Les Pauls going for 3500.00 to 6000.00 that had such obvious finish flaws that I was stunned. I have seen their mandolins vary in fit and finish so wildly I could not believe they were the same models from the same company.

That's all I got.

Topic: gibson apparently in trouble.

No joke betcha Epohone is thriving. Totally accessible price point, classic designs naturally, and some of the specifically Epiphone stuff is incredible.

I have a Casady and a Rumblekat and they are exceptional Iamo especially for the money. Had a Zenith and it was also really impressive.

I would bet Epi is a big contributor to bottom line and they seem to be fine.

Still Gibson needs a new CEO.

100% agreed with this statement. im sure general population that can afford a gibson is about 10-20%. While those who can afford Epiphone products is 100% (this is including those who can buy actual gibson branded instruments.)

Any experience with the new Gibson tuning system? Apparently Gibson have invested a huge amount in this technology, which appeared a little shoddy to my eyes
when I inspected them at Guitar Center.

Do these tuning systems work? Any gigging guitarists using them?

Complete and utter garbage. My guiatrist finally yanked and replaced it after his second one acted the same way, which was basically to not stay in tune...ever. I remember watching in silent embarrassment at the look on his face when he brought it to first rehearsal and realized after the dog and pony show, the darn thing was waaay out. He contacted Gibson, was sent another and the same thing occurred. Now he had an un-giggable mid tier Gibson whose whole selling point was pretty much the tuning system. He yanked it, put in some proper tuners and sold the thing for $200 on eBay.

He has since switched to PRS and only plays his older oddball Gibsons once in a while now.

Since we're all determined to be back on topic and everything...

Let's all post a photo of our currently-owned Gibsons.

Here's my favorite concubine. Purchased new in 1974. I'm its only owner. She's still 100% factory original and in excellent playable condition. They don't make them like this any more. My main bass to this very day.

Gibson is not just a great American guitar company; it is also a hard to place to work, run by a CEO notorious for micromanagement and general bad temper. Would you like a day off for the holidays? "NO."

Gibson's CEO is Henry Juszkiewicz (pictured, with Slash), who became something of a right-wing darling a few years back after he managed to insinuate that a federal raid on his company for illegally importing Indian hardwood was motivated by his own political beliefs, rather than, you know, his company's importation of Indian Hardwood. Over the years, rumors of Juszkiewicz's unpleasantness as a boss have occasionally come our way. The website Glassdoor, where workers can anonymously write reviews of their employers, is Invalid Link Removed railing about the company's "poor ownership," micromanagement from the top, and gripes about senior management, and the CEO in particular. "They actually get a thrill from firing people, they actually want you to fail, I have never seen anything like it," goes one representative example. Says another: "all of this stems from the CEO and his manic psychotic neurotic management style (he has to sign off on EVERYTHING: new hires, transfers within the company, promotions, raises, budgets, any funding for new parts or machines."

Today, we were forwarded this email sent by Henry Juszkiewicz late last month, replying to an employee who had requested a day off around Thanksgiving. We're told that something like 20 people were CC'd on this email chain. Does Gibson really have a "manic psychotic" CEO? You decide.

Subject: RE: Personal Day-Thanksgiving Approval requested

NO

I do not allow leaders to be absent the days before and after a holiday. I had asked Tom to make it clear, but apparently people have not understood or the communication was not clear.

You cannot take long weekends or long holidays unless there are special circumstances. You are leaders and these are work days. During work our leaders need to be there doing their jobs. Taking time off when other people cannot do so or causing insufficient staff during working periods shows a lack of responsibility and consideration for all that depend on our business to be there for them.

Henceforth vacations must be taken for a minimum of one week and must be scheduled well in advance. I will expect a vacation calendar from my direct reports for an entire year.

I will turn down all requests for long weekends and for periods of less than 5 contiguous days without special circumstances.

I also do not believe it is appropriate for a request of this kind is to be shared with others. This suggests where you are coming from [employee name]. I also do not appreciate being lied to about being ill so you can game the system to get what you want [employee name]. As soon as I return from my travels, I will schedule a private conversation about this.

I have counted on the personal integrity of people working with me and have refrained from putting in place a rigorous oversight system. I have asked our HR department to oversee this activity on a spot basis which they have not followed through on. The result is I am seeing a continued decline in decorum, a deterioration in discipline in terms of appropriate attire, coming and going on time and other issues that do not belong in a professional situation with executives that are supposed to be examples of appropriate behavior.

It is not alright to leave early Friday afternoon or arrive late on Monday morning. It is not alright to take extended lunches. The list of unprofessional behavior goes on.

We will be implementing HR policies that were developed at Philips and we have appointed [person] as our global head of Human Resources. These new policies will be promulgated throughout our group of companies and these will be enforced strongly. I will take the time to review these new policies with the people that report to me directly.

I will schedule a private meeting with you [employee name].

I am GREEN with envy. I remember in the early 80's seeing DEVO live at the Paramount in Seattle and the bass player had a Ripper. Man it sounded awesome! And through an SVT double stack!

Beautiful piece there!
