GIBSON Club. Part II

Hi Guys,

I have been a Fender player for the past 30 years. I purchased my first Gibson, an SG, about a year ago. I really love the sound and have playing it with my classic rock cover band. The problem is that it does not stay in tune like my Fenders. Seems like I need to tune afer every 2 or 3 songs. Is this normal for a short scale Gibson? Do I need to upgrade the tuners? Any advice would really be appreciated. Thanks.

how old are the strings? I've only experienced that with brand new strings. if it's not the strings, maybe try tightening the screw in the middle of the gear on the back of the tuners. I wouldn't think the tuners need to be changed.

I had the problem with the rounds that came with the bass when I bought it new last year. I put new GHS flats on the bass 30 days ago and I still having "won't stay in tune" problems. Also, I just checked the screws on the tuners and they were tight. I was hoping the TB players with a lot Gibson bass time might have some insight on this. One of the guitar players in my band is blaming the SG's mohogany neck. I am not sure if I am buying that.

none of my Gibson basses with mahogany necks have ever had tuning issues and I've been playing an EB-3 since the mid 70s. I doubt the neck is the cause of the problem. perhaps it's the tuners but I've never experienced the problem you're having except with brand new strings and then it was only for a day or two. I would try another set of strings and see what happens. I usually use d'addario strings but have used ghs and other brands before without any problems. I've also used rounds and flats so I don't think that's a factor. maybe your repair shop could check it out and see if the tuners are behind it. good luck!

You really have some fantastic luck finding all this stuff. Do you spend all day looking for gear or does it just find it's way to you?

One of my favorite basses. A Tobias made by Gibson , Growler. Don't know if this qualifies me for membership in the club but just gotta say she is a great bass. I have played a lot of Gibson basses thru the 40 years ,still miss my Victoty Custom but this one is a very cool bass.
