You know, I also really like the headless conversion idea. Headless hardware is expensive, but it would be unique and likely very comfortable (no neck dive). And that crap original bridge....

Does the truss rod in the original neck work?

I think it's awesome you do this sort of thing. It shows a real passion for the instruments. I can't tell you how many times I have run across talented, and they are definitely talented, luthiers that end up with a burr in their saddle about one brand or another... or that it was or wasn't made in the USA... or in the 70's or whatever. Their heart is just not in it unless it is that one thing that gets them excited. Please share as the build goes!

I suspect that neck has both the wrong relationship between overall length and scale length, as well as the wrong heel width (too wide).

A broken neck is a Gibson trademark. I’d argue it’s authentic on that point alone. ;-)

If the OP isn’t aware of it by now, several Japanese companies made almost identical copies of these basses under a multitude of brand names. If you owned your own store and wanted your name on the headstock for example, they would do that.
Also, it bears repeating that you’d need a short scale replacement neck, not the commonly available 34”.

There's no shame in being mediocre to bad. It changes, even though it always seems like you can't quite do what you want to be able to do. The boundary just changes over time.

There are 32" scale paddle-head new necks out there. Saw one on Reverb for $70 (might still be 2" longer than the original...)

I have a 2 Yamaha and an Ibanez mikro I save guitars and do them up . Problem is I usually fall in love with them and don’t sell them on like I’m supposed to.

hello can I ask if anyone recognises this bass I saved from landfill . It has no headstock ( broken off). It looks like a Gibson but on the back the plate says made in Japan and I was under the impression Gibson necks weren’t replaceable? Can anyone advise me please ??
