I rather suspect the SU is the ORIGINAL variable venturi carburetor.
Tune it up on a cool humid morning and when the sun comes out, you have to re-tune it in the warm afternoon! Then repeat next morning when it's cool and humid again! Yippee! Maybe it worked out well in Britain where the weather varies from cool and moist to slightly cooler and rainy; in Texas where we can go from 100F at noon to 40F and torrential rain at 5 pm, well, suffice it to say all my friends who had MGs and Triumphs with original SUs didn't run them very long before they started hunting up Weber conversions.
Honestly kinda shocked that MB hasn't brought that pickup to the states. It would probably do pretty alright here...
