BTW, this thread stands as a great example of why tabs ultimately suck. No rhythmic info, no translation to other instruments, just the raw "put your fingers here" info that means nothing to anyone without any context.

All in agree here, the entire idea with tabs is so stupid.

I hardly think anyone who's serious with his/hers playing would ever even think of goin in that direction...

+1 with all the previous replies that you're better off without these clowns. I'll bet you're not the first nor the last to not meet up to their lofty goals.

How did you come across these guys? If it was an ad on Craigslist or something just keep an eye out as to the frequency of their ad. I'll almost guarantee it shows up every few weeks. I've been turned away from gigs for similar reasons before, the whole "you must learn everything perfectly and immediately or you're not pro enough" and it was amazing how long that band ran ads after I wasn't good enough.

Too long to go through all of the thread but judging solely on your original post they sound like a bunch of amateur hacks...tabs...inconsistent rehearsal schedule...no recordings of any kind to help you practice the arrangment, meter, etc....

Mark it down as an experience and a funny story to tell your friends.

Their old bass player is a good friend of mine and they advertised on their myspace page and on some metal forums here in Winnipeg. I've known them for a couple years and if I would have known that they worked they way they did I would never have offered them my services.

I am in another band with guys who understand their insturments, and after reading what you guys think of the whole situation I could care less about being kicked out.

They didn't deserve me.

I knew the notes to all 12 songs. But was only able to play 6 with the band. I only had time to work out the rythem of 6 since I only had 5-6 practices with the band.

In 3 months, they've only had 5-6 practices? No chance they'd go anywhere anyways if they can't practice at least one to two times a week.

Would it have really been so much work to just have them make a recording of each of the songs? It's only 12, right?

The recording doesn't have to be good or anything. Even just a casette tape recording placed outside the garage or whatever would have been passable for learning purposes.


Or they could have used a program like PowerTab or GuitarPro which writes a standard notation score above the tablature and can play it back in MIDI.


Or...whoever wrote the tabs could have taken some time out to show you how to play the songs one-on-one.

Not discounting the fact that they'd probably written the songs together and played together for quite a while, so they know all the little quirks that tabs just can't show.

When someone hands me tabs, I ask them for a wav file instead. Unless songs are really, really technical and a thousand miles an hour, I learn them by ear, the good old fashion way. By doing that, I actually -GASP- learn about MUSIC!! I can tell a major scale from a minor scale by . . . oh my GOD . . . LISTENING to MUSIC!!

Fooey to tabs! I think that young musicians have come to rely too much on them, and have become lazy and rhythmically illiterate as a result. Rocco Prestia never needed no stinking tabs!! Musicians have gotten much better by listening to music and going, "Gee, that's cool. Let me try to learn that."

Now, really did you ask them for the tempo? Recordings (even crude)? Couldn't you make do improvising on some of the songs with just the chords?

Also I agree: while learning on your own is essential, you also learn by playing with the band, because songs are easier to learn when everything falls into place.

If they don't understand that, then good luck to them.

Check in 6 months: they will probably have had 2 or 3 bassists.

Tabs are fine as long as you can make up the limitations some other way (a tape, rehearsals, etc.). Clearly, their expectations of you were not realistic if you only had tabs to work with.

There's also the possibility that they canned you for other reason but they're simply using this as an excuse.

Either way, as seems to be the consensus here.... sounds like you're better off.

It happens, sometimes for the right reason, and sometimes because we are the sidemen of the "show". Whatever, lick your wounds and move on. There is another death metal band forming now in your neighborhood that needs your talent. Learn what you can from the experiences and try not to make the same choices in the future.

that (imo) and tabs. if these pro's give you tabs you better run. joining a band with original material is difficult and it takes time to adapt, to get to know the people and so forth. if they are not prepared to make an effort eff them. remember that bassplayers that can play a bit and have an amp are a rare breed, so plenty of options available

Get yourself a small live recorder to avoid this kind of issue.
