I agree with the "Tabs - BAH" comment. If they gave that to you and expected you to play without a CD/tape/leadsheet/chord chart/etc., they just don't want you.

I get fired from bands because I complain that the band isn't sticking to short breaks, has no set list and isn't committed to learning new music. Yeah - my fault...but good faults to have. I'd rather be in a group that wants to play music rather than wants to get free beer and chicks (then again, I'm an old guy...so maybe you younger death metalheads have different priorities than I do). :p

If they give you TABS, I'd go learn the Nashville number system and give them a song with that and see what they do with it. If they say they can't read it, you know it's time to move on to play with real musicians.

These guys can't even rehearse on a schedule let alone gig, tour or record. Sounds like a bunch of whiney posers to me. Count your blessings that you didn't waste any more time with these Mama's Boys.
Invest your time taking some lessons or learning some music that will get you somewhere.

Yeah, they were originals.

My main band broke up in Feb., but me and some of the members started a new band just after I joined the one I got fired from. We are playing our first show in August. So now I have more time to work on something with real musicians, and work on my solo stuff.

IMO they were in the wrong. should have had a session with just you and the drummer and one axe player, taped, so you could get the feel for the tune. Tab is bush league, and tab alone is BS.

at the least, had they been serious, they'd have given you a scratch tape with the guitar and drums to play to. That'd be REALLy easy for such a high quality band, no?

Nah, there is something else there. It may still be "you", but there is something else to it.

Move on imo.

But you should have been able to read minds. There is no excuse.

Personally, I think that unless they are complete idiots, they had it in for you or something.

Exactly what I was about to say. Good job with them firing someone who knew half of their material after 3 months, and having to begin that whole process all over again.

3 carrot sticks says that they call you back in a month and beg you to come back when the new guy has only 2 songs down :smug:

Weird, what a scenario.

I'm out here too and I am learning fast.You have to ask these nuts what they want.If I am going to audition as a commercial artist I want to present a solid packaged performance. I need to know the songs and how you perform them.

While I am not a "tab hater" I do agree with JimmyM on this one. Tab has it's place, but if a band expects you to know the music before rehearsal then the responsibility is on them to provide you with the written music, or a tab and recording.

Don't blame yourself. They're a bunch of fools, and you're better off without them.

If they can't keep practices, and are unable to give you the information to learn the music, they're expecting something with giving nothing in return.

During the past 24+ years I've auditioned for numerous heavy metal bands - some covers, some originals - and without exception they have provided me with a means to learn their material. Sometimes they've just handed me recordings and sometimes I've had to ask for them. If they were cover songs and they didn't provide me with the songs I would get a list of the songs and make a tape or CD (usually from my own collection of LP's and CD's) and then learn the songs at home.

But I've never had a band hand me a bunch of tabs and expect me to learn from them and I've never had a band say they would get me material to learn from and then not provide it after weeks go by and then not bother to go over the songs on the scheduled practice days.

How does a disorganized bunch of boobs like that think they are headed on to something big?



I'll add my comment to the top of the pile. They did you a favor by firing you.
