3. Death metal -- you're only going to get so far anyway. This is a niche musical area that has fairly narrow, limited appeal. I'm assuming you're in this to make it big?

Tabs don't always suck if you have a recording to play with. And it is possible to display that other information in tab form...

Don't get frustrated or de-motivated. IMO, these guys don't understand music. At least, if they were musicians, they'd understand that tabs won't help at all to really learn music.

I tried to use tabs for a very short while, but decided that my ears provide a much better means to learn songs.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try to find a band consisting of musicians...

Yep. Couldn't agree more. They can be useful, but only IF one has the arrangement to which they refer.

Sounds like they were looking for an excuse to get rid of you. I am betting that those skipped practices they were telling you about was with another bass player. If that was indeed the case, you are much better off without them.

These noobs did you a favor. Don't waste a moment regretting it. Good learning experience for you on how unprofessional and unreasonable people can be. No recordings? They play 12 tunes and don't have even crude recordings??? Was it their desire to waste as much time as possible??? These guys are wet behind the ears, and they don't even have common sense. Tablature is not the biggest sin in music, but without tempo and timing, TABS are pretty useless. Move on, and count your blessings. This was your big red flag. If you had stayed in the band, they would have revealed more unhealthy destructive behavior, guaranteed. Find some guys who don't have their heads up their butts.

If Death metal is your thing look for a fast guitarist and a drummer that can blast for 2 min straight and a screamer and make a new band to just show them up !

I agree I prefer notation, but even when I asked for that they replied we don't know any theory.

It's weird that even though these guys didn't know what they are doing, because they were a group, can make you feel like the one who is wrong. That's essentially what happened, rejected by a band not worth joining is still rejection. They have no gigs, don't even know what theory is (it's not musical notation), don't discipline themselves to practice, and are looking to make a record deal by luck.

We, the great group of bassists online, say this is not a good band to be in and you can find a better band.

I joined this death metal band back in March, and last week they fired me.

There add said they wanted a bass player willing to tour, record, all the normal stuff a serious band is looking for. I answered the add, and they asked if I could come down in 2 days and audition. I said sure. They sent me the bass tabs to one of their songs, no indication on the rhythm, tempo or anything just what notes. I learned the song, but had to work out tempo and all that at the audition.

Went to the audition and got the spot. Came home and they emailed me the tabs to 12 songs. Same as the first, just notesand was told that they practice once a week on Tuesdays 7:00 till 9:00.

From the end March until now I was able to play 6 songs from beginning till end with the band. They would cancel every second or third jam which made it difficult to learn their material on my own. I had not jammed with them in over a month. Went to practice last Tuesday, and got fired.

I showed up, they were outside; first thing the guitarist/vocalist says to me is "How many songs do you know?" I tell him “6 all the way through." Other guitarist says "We need to part ways. You should know all 12 by now." I agree that in that time span learning 12 songs isn’t that hard but without regular jams. ***. I explain this to them and they reply “We need a bass player that can learn on there own and not with the band.”

I am wrong. Does this make sense.

I am not mad (as I am probably better off without them) I just wanted to post this and see if my fellow TBer's think this bands reasons make sense, and if anyone else has been let go from a band for the same reasons. I have had some people tell me that I deserved it and others say I didn't. What do you guys think?

I think they were unreasonable. And they could not or would not provide you with recordings of the songs. Probably because there were no recordings to provide. They'll probably still be looking for a bass player long after you've found the right band.

I was also fired from a band about 2 months ago. After getting over my initial indignation, I'm fine with having been fired. I was without a band only for a week and this is a far better band than the one that fired me.

Btw, IMO, once it was obvious they weren't going to get the recordings to you, I would have bailed since you had no way to learn the songs.

I don't know about you, but my definition of a band is hanging out with each other and feeding off each others creativity. Sounds like you were an outsider from the begining. Never would have worked anyway.
Find people that want to work with each other and support each other. There's nothing like it.

In pretty much every band, if not every band I have been a part of I have had problems like this that have led to either me dropping out or bandmates firing me. I am unlucky, I guess. Your story reminded me so much of past bandmates. From my experience good communication between band members is everything. Much like your ex-bandmates mine never bothered to give me any real useful information before practices, and even then I'm sure there were more cancelled sessions than sessions that actually went ahead. It gets worse - the sessions themselves were always awful. For example there were times where the bands (one) guitarist, being a typical guitard, would arrive, get set up and say something like "oh - I forgot to learn those songs. woops". Yeah - "woops". Never mind - it's only three hours of wasted time (and money) in a practice studio...

And then of course you finally meet with the rest of the band and they tell you that you should be able to play everything perfectly by now, despite the fact that learning their stuff was pretty much impossible considering their stupid tabs made no sense out of context and you never got a chance to actually practice the damn songs with the rest of the band due to it's leader's poor communication with their bandmates, let alone the fact that when you finally got a chance to practice with the band the guitarist doesn't know the songs or the drummer never arrives, only to send a text message the next day (for example - I'm definately writing from my own experiences there, sorry).

I apologise for going on like this but these things really annoy me. I mean, I'm not perfect, but I do make a real effort with bands. I want it to work out. I guess my point is you are better off without bandmates like these guys. They are a waste of time, effort and money. My advice would be to keep playing and practicing, improving all the time and hopefully at some point you will find the right set of guys and it will all be good because they won't do the things those other idiots did that meant your band was doomed to failure.

Yeah, they were originals.

My main band broke up in Feb., but me and some of the members started a new band just after I joined the one I got fired from. We are playing our first show in August. So now I have more time to work on something with real musicians, and work on my solo stuff.

This whole story is funny as he**. Thanks for sharing this with us and I'm surprised you put as much effort into the project as you did. Hey, at least you got a funny story out of it.

You have no idea how hard I'd be laughing after getting fired from such a group as this.
